HI gang.

I've had over 9 m3's and owing to bad knee have bought a evo smg with 83K on it. The last week its jumped out of gear twice, and suddenly gone in to neutral whilst moving along in 3rd, a the warning light popped up, then i pressed the brake then it reengaged the geras again. also this morning it popped out of gear, and looked like the ignition had been turned off and on, as the oil check light was flashing?

Anyone else had issues?

Sounds like a tricky one to me. I'd give you local specialist a call and pick their brains over it. Or give these guys a try : Highams Park Motor Co. 0208-523-3443. They're my local specialist and do all the work on both my BMW's. All very helpfull and ex master technicans so really know their stuff. HAving an SMG M3 i'd like to find out myself whats going on there with yours for future refrence.

Hope this is of any help and let us know how you get on please.

Hi,

I Had a similar problem on my E36 M3 SMG, It was a worn selector position sensor, mine was covered under a warranty I had, but they only cost £120ish (plus labour) anyway. The car loses track of which gear it's in and as a precaution selects neutral, sometimes it'll then select around the problem gear i.e. 3rd-5th, missing out 4th until the system is reset (dealer job).

It can be irritating, but it's not the end of the world and doesn't cause any further damage to the car.......

..... which is just as well becasue mine is for sale now :shameless plug mode off

Cheers mate, that seems like it could be the issue, as it selects neutral, then when you hit the brake it reselects the correct gear, and thought he warning light pops on, theres never been a error code.

the gear box seems fine, as i gave it some trashing the other night and it was fine. only seems to play up when pottering around town.

Spoke to the specialist, and they suggested checking the oil levels on the smg first. Which I did. It was below low so topped it up and hopefully thats sorted it.

Drove it for an hour last night slow and very quick through the gears, but well see.

Spoke to bmw re the gear selection switch, they couldnt work out which bit I meant, and then saiod their master techinian suggested i didnt diagnose it myself. (im sure theyd like to charge me to fix it)

Thanks for all the advice.

week on and its been ok still, keeping an eye on the oil level now, the chf11s oil was an odd one, on intenet tool a while to find some oil, good old ebay ;0)

The handbook says not to top the oil up in the smg unit, says to go to bm, and the odd thing was the picture of the places to check the oil under the bonnet in the hand book doesnt even show the smg oil resevoir ;0)
