Could anyone please clarify if having bought a just over 3yr old BMW with a 1yr BMW approved used car warranty from a BMW dealer I can go to another (more local) dealer to ask them to inspect the car and carry out warranty repairs?

We bought an E46 convertible from a BMW dealer 40 miles away about 4 months ago. Since then, when the roof is retracted an oily stain and a slight indentation is left on the beige trimmed part of the covering panel that folds down over the stowed hood and another piece of trim fails to relocate to cover the gap left by the retracted 'irons' on one side.

The supplying dealer are happy to inspect the car but this will involve an 80 mile 'round trip + a day off work.

When I contacted my local dealer they said that it was a trim issue (yeah right) - not a mechanism issue and that they would charge to just inspect the car - can they do this?

I would have that that they could not charge to inspect a potential warranty claim (even if they did not supply the car?

If the inspect the car and find nothing requires fixing then you can't claim that cost on your warranty.

Also the warranty might not cover it - check your warranty exclusions carefully.
