clutch replacement on e36 evo
Discussion
hi everyone
have a noisy clutch release bearing and looking at replacing clutch aswell whilst tackling this. car has fbmwsh - but it is an old car and i intend to keep it so not worried about main dealer history - what sort of money would an indy charge? (does anyone know dealer book time for this?)
could get involved with some mates - but it is a work hack so enthusiasm/time is low + if it's anything like as awful as doing an e30 clutch with those hex nuts at top of bellhousing i am not at all interested
do you have to replace clutch and flywheel @same time or just clutch? - clutch plate seems fine - but i assume labour is main component of cost?
thanks ross

I recently replaced the clutch in my M Coupe. Around £200 for the clutch from www.c3bmw.co.uk and I believe 7 hours labour. Find a good Indy and pay him cash. Works out much cheaper :-)
what a plonker i am!
authorititavely went to local indy - millstream in gomshall, guildford with 2 cans of castrol 0-40 and vanos screw/filter and asked them to do oil change and change clutch and investigate rough idle
ivan the chief mechanic asked if i really wanted to change the clutch - cos in his view this was unnecessary - the clutch release bearing noise was down to the factthe idle at 600 rpm was causing engine/clutch assy to shake - the reason for the rough idle was down to the fact that the electric plug which causes inlet cam timing to be changed by vanos was disconnected....
once connected i have discovered that the vanos does actually make the car pull below 4k - which it did not do beforehand for obvious reasons! i have never driven an evo before and thought it had no torque as part of the deal - i am now pleasingly enlightened!
moral for me - just take the car down to the garage and ask them to fix it without volunteering idiot diagnosis!
the bill of a mere £129 was the right start to a bank holiday weekend
