looking at a 2001 525d or 530d? Small price difference but keeping her for three years at least, so is the 30 a far better car or not? is a re-map on the cards?

New to this "room" normaly lurk in the pub and conrod, so hello and thanks in advance!

525d is more economical but a bit underpowered in the E39 range. In the E60 it had a bit of an upgrade which is good, but yes the 530d is quicker and nicer to drive. BUT, do not expect to have massive fuel economy with either engine though. They are good, but not 50+ MPG good. A spirited 530d may get 40ish but mid 30's are more common. A 525d will get a few more but personally I would only look at 530d's.

Good cars, but remember its a 1.7 tonne car and no matter what you do to it, its still heavy and you will pay the penalty at the pumps. And yes, you can chip both, but the 530d has more options - just make sure you have the later uprated engine as its got more to give.
