Hi

I have just (last week) brought a '00 535 sport from my local BMW garage its only got 55k on it and all was going well, well until this morning that is first I started it drove it for a hundread metres or so, stopped at some traffic lights and the idle seemed really lumpy (rocking the car slightly) which it hadn't done until now... then I got to destination, just as i got home a yellow engine light appeared on the left of the dash, I parked turned the engine off and restarted and the light came back on. I checked the manual and it says that there has been a deterioration in the emissions and to get it checked by BMW, so I have a couple of questions!

Is the car safe to drive i.e. is it going to do more damage to the engine etc by driving it?
What is this fault likely to be?
Depending on the above is this likely to be covered by the BMW warranty? (considering I have only done 80 miles!!!)

Thanks in advance for any help

Ring BMW emergency service. They will likely trailer teh car to the dealer. And yes it will be covered.

Assuming of course it was a BMW franchised dealer not an indpepdent.

Had this happen on my 01 M5 at 78k miles. Was an oxygen sensor which was replaced. Total bill was about £170/80. As mentioned if your car was bought from an official BMW dealer should be done on yourcar under warranty.

In the long term check if your BMW dealer does a discount scheme for older cars called 4+, knocks about 15% service off bills.

Hi cheers for all that ..

Fortunatly I did buy it from a main dealers so should all be covered ... was just really concerned that it might have been a cat

just phoned BMW recovery and they were very helpful. sending a man and a van out, they thought it sounded like a coil... so hopefully we should have it sorted (looking for some wood to touch)

I have this happen on mine a couple of times when I have switched
off the car when it is still warming up.

Possibly a too rich mixture upsetting the sensors.

I ignored the problem, and gave the car a good sound thrashing,
bouncing off the rev limiter.

That seemed to shut it up.

Your problem might be different.
