MP3 connection via Aux input?

Hi,
I have a 1 series and it has an Aux input on the centre console. Can this be used to connect an ipod to play through the headunit?
The car has the basic BMW business CD headunit - I can't see an Aux button on it.
If it does work, what stereo lead do I need to connect it up?
