hey people, my nice BMW 328 coupe got diagnosed with the nikasil crap a few months back now like april time!
since then been trying to sort something with the dealer all fell through though when BMW said it had missed or didn't have 1 service interval recorded so would not contribute and now it's over 6 years old don't legally have to either!

i tried to get the thing sorted and talked to trading standards when the dealer became difficult. we manage to agree eventually on him finding me a second hand 2.8 engine for my 328 that had the problem already fixed or an engine which didn't have the problem. my car is a 1997 and i think they sorted it by 98! when i got the car i knew bout the issue and thought 'bah what the chances' silly me eh!

still basically the dealer is trying to find an engine and has been for a while now and i'm getting bored of calling him all the time so wondered if someone here could point me in the right direction to source a new or fixed engine for my car!
it's a 328 coupe 1997 on an R with ASC and air con (dunno what info you might need so thought i'd add) oh and i'm in essex so closer the better i guess!

thanks for any help people! love the car just gutted it's got this prob!

oh and sorry for any typo's too it's hot and not quite awake! and not awake to use a spell checker hehe!

unless your engine is not working, or really running rough, there is no need to change your engine. You just need to keep an eye on your oil level and simply run it into the ground! I have an E34 540i with 222300 miles, original nikasil engine and apart from drinking a litre of oil every 2k miles its fine. The best thing you can do for a nikasil engine is to give it as few short runs as possible, give it ample time to warm up before you give it the beans and keep an eye on that oil!
Remember you only need to change the engine when it works no more.

I used to run an e39 528 - I got told by the dealer that it tends to be cars run/bought originally up north as thats where the 'bad' petrol tended to be on sale. Also 100k seemed to be the cut off anything up to that point BM dealers were told to be sympathetic to claims even quite recently, on the nikasil issue and if the engine has done more than 100k it probably is never going to have the problem.

I've heard very mixed opinions on this. Many say high mileage cars that haven't had the issue never will, but I did speak to one BMW technician before buying my car that said all cars are likely to suffer at some point. Saying that most seem to go in the 40-90k mark. My Dad's E59 went at about 60k but the engine in mine was replaced at 30k odd so bit of a lottery.
