Does anyone know if it's possible to fit the internals of the E46 M3 "M-diff" into the rear diff casing fitted to an E46 330d?? The casings are not identical externally, but may share internal components like the bearings etc? It would make the 330d significantly more fun to drive with the DSC off, and would make getting out of muddy rally service parks with my car and trailer combo a lot easier!

I asked about this for a friends 330i, you need to fit an M3 rear subframe to fit the M Diff, the prop would need modifying too, not sure on the driveshafts as I didn't pursue it after that.

Drexxler make diffs that fit the petrol 330 so I guess they'd fit yours but they are noisy motorsport diffs.

Try a quaife diff, probably get one built to fit for less than a grand I'd imagine.

I emailed quiafe for a diff for my 330i and they replied saying they don't currently make one for the 330i. To make one they need an order for 10 units and they need a diff off a standard car...

er, no thanks! If your gonna fit a diff to the back of a bimmer, then you might as well cash in on the huge amount of money and time that BMW / ZF spent developing a speed sensitive diff for the M3, rather than the £9.56 Quaiffe spent making theirs! lol! That and the fact that when you multiply the 500Nm odd by the diesels low 1st gear it makes it hard work for any diff!

think i'll get a second 330d diff and see if i can "machine" the M-diff spool into the middle of it?

Good luck fitting it all in:

The Variable M Differential Lock recognizes the differential speed building between the driven wheels and generates pressure in an integrated shear pump. This pressure activates a multiple plate clutch via a piston, and conveys drive forces to the wheel with better grip, according to the difference in wheel rotation speed. In extreme cases, the entire drive forces may be transmitted to the wheel with a better frictional coefficient.

The M Diff also has cooling vanes on the casing, I guess you'd need them too?

Or try one from one of the earlier M3s?
