Hi folks, this is my 1st post, wanting to say hello
I pick up my new motor tomorrow, 2001 330 petrol coupe; topaz blue, beige sports leather, 18" wheels mmmmmm.....
I'll never get a kip tonight, not felt like this since I was 8 years old on Xmas eve LOL

Just a quick question - I know the dealer will hand it over with only fumes in the tank (they always do, tight gits), do you guys use Optimax or other higher RON petrol or is the usual stuff OK ?

Thanks for reading and hello again !

Hi and welcome. Good to see another fellow BMW owner here.

To be honest on the petrol issue, its down to personal choice. They all have damn fine electronics and they can deal with just about anything you put in it (with in reason of course). Use 98+ and its good, but 95 is just as good - just use good quality stuff.

But other than that - good choice.... I think you will love it...

I found my 330Ci ran better after a few tanks of Optimax, and seemed to do more MPG too... maybe in the mind, but there have been a couple of mag tests which support this view.

It will run absolutely fine on 95, and it will do it no harm at all, but the engine management is set up for 97 or 98, hence the ignition will be slightly retarded to avoid pinking so a bit less power...

Only the best for your new baby surely? And a bargain at only a couple of extra £ a tank...

According to the manual you run the wrath of the German Valkyre... It says very strictly that only official BMW washer fluid (and concentrate if you have the headlamp washers) can be used - using anything else will result in less than optimum cleaning performance....

Pah.... and my dads bigger than your dad....

To be fair, I used budget washer fluid throughout my ownership, and the washers got blocked...

Blue and beige, excellent choice!

I run my Z4 3.0i on 98RON (Optimax), but I've never tried 95 in it so I can't really comment on the difference in this car. But from past experience in my Smart Roadster 98RON makes the engine run more smoothly, and you make back the 7% greater cost in economy savings, so I'd go with that.

As for the 101RON etc. available from some places at the moment, I'd probably not bother, because if the compression is set up for 98RON max (as it is in the M54B30), 101RON won't make any difference.

The BP Ultimate 103 (?) is a staggering £3 per litre, and only available is garages local to some tracks as far as I can tell.

Tescos do a 99 octane fuel, but with Optimax you get the whole cleaning additive etc stuff in it too which is a good thing.

BP Optimax all the way.

I have switched to this after using the Shell equivalent and noticed some difference, for the positive, plus as Robertb says, there's the cleaning...

Well done on the purchase, I know you'll love it!
