530 Sport - Oil Consumption

I've just picked up a lovely '02 plate 530 Sport, but I've noticed that the oil level is nearing the minimum mark on the dipstick. It was only serviced about 4000 miles ago, so I'm assuming it would have been filled to the maximum level at that point. Should a 530 use any oil under normal driving conditions? It doesn't really concern me, as I used to have a TVR Griffith, which used to drink oil like it was going out of fashion. I'm just curious. Can anyone recommend a good oil to use for top-up purposes?

My 330 usually needs 2 to 3 litres top up between 15k services.
I've heard of others that need more and some that don't drink anything.

Yours is quite normaly in my experience.

It seems that some of the BMW 6-pot diesels use a fraction of oil.
Not a problem, i wouldn't think.
