Any 116i Sport owners on here?
Discussion
I suffered a 120d for 5 months before ditching it, I was almost please to loose so much money on it.
I'll not take up space here with my comments as they are on an earlier post.

Have you considered a 325 Compacy Sport? Superb car, 190 ish bhp, very swift, comfy, generally very well specced, can pick up a 52 reg for £11k to £12k I should think.
Its not too thirsty either, 35 mpg on a good run i think.
It would wipe the floor with a 1 series, particularly the 116.

Pros
Rear drive, badge, Bangle design, entertaining chassis, front end grip, traction, sports seats with air bolsters, steering feel, can debadge model.
Cons
Low power, badge, Bangle design, suspension with 17's to stiff if not in the mood, price, seats have no lumber support unless option ticked, other BMW models in price range, not as economical as you would think.

I don't know how to explain it but I just feel sad for the person inside when I see a 116.
£17-18k for a car that takes over 10sec to 60?
I didn't realise BMW even made such a slow car!!!!
I know performance isn't everything but it seems a really poor value for money especially compared to lightly used better engined car. If you want the warranty and the dealer experince then buy an approved used.

Not going for a new car...approved @ around £13K 05 plate which I think is decent value compared to mediocre opposition.
Just don't want to buy a 52 plate 318i and keep it for 5 years after which it'll be knackered and worth **** all.
I've done the sports car thing (Elise S1) and don't feel the need to go there again so performance ain't way up there in priorities. Need something good looking (I think the 1 series is...way better in metal than pictures, holds price, safe and yes, I like the badge.
Now considering a 118 Sport for a little more oomph.

How much more do you think a your £13k 1 series wil be worth.
The earlier suggestion is very good imo . .
An E46 325Ti can be had for around £10k. After 5 years the respective values of that and your £13k 1 series will be less than the £3k you've saved in the 1st place.
You also get a car which is much nicer to drive.

Well a three year old E46 wont be knackered or worth **** all after 5yrs! (if you look after it properly)
Even a 12yr old BMW may be worth **** all (depending on model) but its still far from knackered if correctly maintained

I'm on my second 116i.
Pros:
Noticeably rigid bodyshell.
Great handling, accurate steering (I prefer 205/55 x 16 tyres for optimum feel without tramlining)
Smooth, refined NG4 engine
Precise gearbox - 6 speed on our new one.
Great build quality.
Unusual styling.
Compact size for city use
Good seats & driving position.
Reasonable perfomance for engine size
Cons:
Fuel economy not as good as expected (possibly reason for introduction of 6-speed box)
Rear seat legroom obviously limited
Boot space obviously limited
More wind noise/cabin noise than E46 (apparently better on latest version possibly again due to 6-speed box).
Unusual styling....
Great build quality, but a feeling that it is built down to a price - ie missing features.
Overall, better driving experience than E46, but for me, less pleasing to own. With a sensible spec, ie not a fully loaded 130i, then I see no reason for depreciation to be vastly different from 30% in year 1, and then 10% each following year. If it's what you've set your heart on, then no real grounds not to go ahead with buying it.

I have had a 118d since December and love it, 47mpg at 70+mph, big enough for us and a dog. It has a smooth engine thats faster than the 116 and 118 petrols.
As previously posted it has pros and cons but all cars do. I personally think that all non Bangle BMWs are starting to look dated.
If you want sensible buy a Mk5 Golf 1.6, I did and hated every minute of it.

I have had the pleasure(?) of a 118d for 3 days whilst the 530d SE I was entrusted with went into the dealer for some warranty work.
It was 'nice enough' but IMHO it was simply no patch on either the E39 or the E46 (Previously they gave me a '55 320Cd Coupe for 2 days so I've experienced all three), pristine examples of both of which can be had similar money.
As for the residuals of the older shape cars, do you honestly think that a bottom of the range 4 cylinder 1 Series is going to be worth.. well, anything remotely special in 5 years time? I'd wager it'll probably be worth less than the equivilent 03 plate 320i Sport you could hope to pick up for the same money.
As for the 1 itself - handling was tidy, interior build quality was good (But no better than E46) but overall I just felt a complete turkey driving it. Almost as if I expected everyone would look at me, think 'He wanted a BMW but couldnt afford one so he got a 1 Series'.
With 3 Series values as they are following the release of the E90, take advantage and get yourself a nice 320i.

Look, my budget of £14K buys a 2002/03 318i/320i with 30-40k miles. Yes I'd love a 320i Sport saloon but I do not have a spare £19K available.
The comment on the 1 series being the poor mans BM is true but it can continue all the way up the model line...wanted a 5 series but could only afford a 318i etc.
Now there are literally 1000s of these 318is on the road and imo they look dull as . I would put my mortgage that I will resell my car at a much higher price in 2008 than the 318i.
My choice of all black 2005 118i Sport 7.5 inch alloys is more special imvho.
But I guess horses for courses.
