Hi,

I've been toying with the idea of buying a used 645 and am thinking about making an offer on a car that appeals.

A parent at my kids' school has had one for just over a year and raves about his - BUT when I met him at a cricket match the other day he was mightily pissed off - he wants to swap it in for a Merc CLS 500 and was offered just £34k from the Merc dealership in part exchange! He took it to the supplying BMW dealer and they offered just £33k. He tells me he paid £55k for it! He's given up the ideal of changing for now as he is sick at the thought of losing £21k+ in 17 months. I am thinking about seeing if he would sell it to me but need to know what the approximate value might really be - as I too don't want to get stuck with a car that is worth far, far less than I paid for it ;-)

It is a December 2004 car (54). 9,000 miles. Dark grey. Red leather. 19" wheels. Top of the range navigation system + TV. It does look in very good condition.

I had a quick look on the BMW site and can find similar cars listed for about £40-42k so his does look 'cheap' compared to those prices - but there again I have often found that I can negiotiate big discounts on used cars from BMW dealers so perhaps they do have a massive margin to play with based on what this guy was offered for his?

Anyone got any thoughts about what the trade value of his car is? How much would you pay for it? Thanks!

Alan.

From your post its clearly worth £33k trade value and perhaps £35-£37k privately.

Sometimes its easier to kick a dealer than an associate, if he cant stomache the massive loss then £2k more is unlikely to cheer him up

Like Bennno says, its probably worth £34k ish on trade-in anyway. A touch more for a private sale. The problem is that they drop like a stone. All big coupes do and a BMW is no difference (regardless what a BMW salesman might say about residual values). I have been at a main dealers a bit recently and they have a couple 645's up for £42k and £45k. One is on an 04 the other an 05.... so if you think about a main dealer warrantied sale for a few thousand more than a private, well its about right.... I mean, you should be able to get a £42k car for £40k-£39k - thats still less than 10% discount anyway!!!

Might be worth a punt, but be warned though - they will keep dropping in value and the model is due for a refresh soon and hence it is likely to get hit again. The big-6 has never been the best looker in the world so its just not trendy..... (which I think is a good thing).

Oh, and they even have 630i's for £34k now.... almost a bargain

My old man bought a 645 in August last year for 54k and has just been offered 32k in Pex, car's only done 22k! That's worse than my M3 and i wouldn't touch one purely because of that, but, at 35k i think it would be a steal, they drive really well, very smooth and relaxing

X5 4.8is bought new, after 12 months and 15000 miles, paid £64K offered £41K by stealer!!

It's not just a problem with the 6 series, and not just BMW. Try an Audi A8!!

That said, a 645 for £34k is a bargain. Great car, not overly sporty more big GT but very nice.

All cars depreciate. We bought one of the original cars with strong residuals - a C class Estate new last summer. We paid £24k, discounted from £26.8k. Its a good spec with metallic, leather, electric seats, car phone, sport pack, auto, decent alloys etc - seemed good value as its an almost entry level car with range prices going up to £38k.

4 months at 8k miles later I was offered just £15k for it.

Some times its better just to hold on, the depreciation curve just slows down. My guess is that my estate will still be worth £12k at 3 years old with 40k on the clock. In which case the first 4 months cost 9k, whilst the subsequent 32 will cost just 3k!!

My fear with a 645 if that its potentially still on a steep bit of the depreciation curve, with the potential for dealer values to drop in to the low 30's and mid 20's over the next year..

Well guess what...? I bumped in to the 645 owner outside school earlier today and asked him how he was getting on with selling the car... he took it to another Merc dealer this morning and they only offered £31k part-ex against a CLS 500. I asked him if he would consider selling privately whereupon he told me about a colleague of his who spent 3 months advertising their 645 (also a 54 plate) in Autotrader... and got not a single enquiry (and he says they were asking £38k). His response was: "I think I am stuck with it... the thought of losing so much so quickly is bl**dy annoying!".

Hearing about his mate who couldn't shift their 645 has now made me re-think things... perhaps not so many people share my love of the car? I could make him an offer of course - but I think I'll see if I can grab a copy of Glasses Guide or similar to see what the trade guides say it is worth... anyone have access to one and could look up a rough value??? I obviously accept that depreciation is something we have to live with but if I could get a fresh car where someone else has taken the brunt of the loss then I might take a plunge and make him an offer - would help if I could predict how much the car might be worth in two years time though!

June CAP book..........

645Ci Auto 2004 54 10,000 miles (value adjusted for 54 plate on 04) CAP clean £38300, avg £37200, below £35800. Retail £43250.

The books are only a guide so but if they are hammering the price it's for a good reason. Same old story if you like the car and want to keep it a reasonable amount of time (i.e. a couple of years) then go for it. As an example of the book not always telling the correct story I had a 2002 745i myself and was a pain to get shifted and almost had to give it away in the end, so imagine the 6's are the same story
