I didnt start the engine, but seems I need a new tank, pumps ans sender units - approx £1500!! The tank supposedly warps - how crap is that?

Not just a simple drain. AA chap and every garage I spoke to seem to get about 1 car a day with this problem..

Dabber,

That's crap mate. Just get the tank drained and fill to the brim with diesel. If you didn't start it, then there is no draw of unleaded through the pumps/lines etc. I know dozens of people who have done the same thing and have just had the tank drained. Sounds like someone is trying to make a bit of money out of you to be honest.

In the 60's and 70's, when diesel technology was less advanced than it is today, people would add 4 star to the tank to stop it waxing. You can safely get away with about £5 worth or unleaded in a modern diesel without any damage.

Just get it drained and fill to the brim. Do 50 miles and refill. Repeat a couple of times and it'll be fine. For goodness sake don't tell BMW either. They'll note it and may use it against you in a future warranty claim.

Cheers
Matt

Next problem seems to be anyone who will touch it. Because it's a newish car they seem shit scared of receiving a claim if it goes wrong.

Evidently the 5 has a saddlebag shaped tank which has 2 pumps to balance it. The pumps are designed to be lubricated by the diesel, if not they(SOMETIMES)lunch themselves and let shards of metal into the system. The tank warping issue is also real. How crap is that??

I have a pal at a BM main dealer and he confirmed this stuff off the record and was also dealing with a £6500 claim on a 320d that they had sold secondhand. It had gone pop 8 miles after the purchaser picked it up. Turns out there are bits of fuel pump in the system.

Gut feel is that I still agree with you guys though!

I put unleaded in my A3 TDi and drove off! Didn't realise until the car ground to a halt 200 yds down the road.

Audi drained the tank, fitted a new fuel filter and I was off the next day with no problems.

At last! I've found a good reason to chose an Audi over a BMW!

dabber,

I don't know a garage in Portsmouth that could help out, despite having lived there for a few years as a student! I'll have an ask around my office as there is at least 1 person in today who's done the same thing and it cost him about £140 to have the tank drained and refilled.

Cheers

Some insurance companies have apparently paid out on these events.

Does sound a bit iffy if you can't drain the tank.

Millers Diesel Power Plus will lube the pumps but you don't want to be running them in petrol if the vast majority of it can't be drained.

Get it trucked up to Emtec (BMW Indys) in Salisbury. They'll do it for you I'm sure.

As long as you get it drained quickly & the ignition hasn't been on (electric fuel pumps) then there's no way anything can be damaged.

Remeber, the diesel only lubes it when it's running, so I'm sure you'll be fine, & as long as BMW don't know, should anything go tits up down the road, they are none the wiser.

Good luck!

Gwaredd.

P.s. Buy one of those diesel reminder things off ebay that fit inside you fuel cap!

i have a newish diesel merc, it's had water in the tank twice due to faulty tanks at garages. both times it was flushed and ran perfectly after, i had an A3 tdi with a gallon of petrol in it, filled the tank with diesel and it ran perfectly, i guess it depends how much you put in the tank. at my works we have a berlingo diesel it had over ten litres of petrol by mistake then filled with diesel, it did run but was not happy, i realise these are not high performance vehicles but you may get away with it.

Did you prime the intake by putting in the key?
Otherwise, i can't see how any diesel/petrol mix will have moved from the tank towards the engine?

???
