Hello there fellow BMW owners i need some help please.

After using the car on Saturday evening (which it did get a bit of a hard time if i'm honest), every so often on starting the car i get a funny noise from the engine which with a blip of throttle goes away, BUT, now here's my concern, i've just been outside to move the car and its been standing for a good few hours, on starting i got the noise in question, blipped the throttle and.....nothing. Its still there. So i popped the bonnet and after sticking my head under there it sounds like a machine gun going off!!.

The noise itself seems to be coming from the front of the engine. I've owned the car now for 2 years and its never missed a beat, ok its sounded a little bit rattlely and grumbly from time to time but nothing too out of the ordenary ie: up untill now i've been a firm believer in the VANOS units working perfictly as it pulls like a train ALL the way round the speedo.

Is this it, are my worst nightmares comming true, is it new VANOS time. As i've never experianced the noise of a VANOS unit that has let go i don't know what to look or listen for.

The one thing i am pretty sure of is its going to be expensive. If there's anybody out there that can shead some light on this.......

Many thanks,

M3john.

Milage is now at 97k. It hasn't done this before and last night after i posted up i thought i'd take it round the block a few times. But this time the noise came, i blipped the throttle and it went.....spooky.

Do you think so mate. I really can't empathise how noisy it is/was. If you've ever heard a car running with a valve thats colliding with the piston, thats what its like.

That loud!!!

I have heard a couple and they tended to rattle as the revs came down to idle after a blip.

For the cost of the work on the link, it might be worth the effort.

The test for worn VANOS gears is supposed to be: Start engine, lift bonnet & put head underneath; use the throttle cable to rev it to about 4000 and let go; if you hear a loud noise like marbles rattling in a tin can it is BAD NEWS.

No definatly not that mate.

Just got back from my local indipendent (Highams Park Motor Co. 0208-523-3443 for those of you in the London area) and they seem to think it might be a problem with a air pump that blows into the exaughst to help with the imissions. The guy at the garage removed fuse #26 and this `seems` to have tempary cured it.

As anybody else come across a problem with these ?????

Yes mate,

Standind on the passenger side of the car, remove the lid and there are a bank of about 10 fuses to the lower right of the fuse box. Counting from left to right numbers 21 upwards.

Hope this is of any help.

John.

Thank you kind sir.

Well if i'm honest, i know they exist but, i've yet to see a cleaner one, be it show car or every day driver. If you look on my profile you'll notice that it's also as clean and well maintained on the UNDERSIDE !!!
