Hi Chaps

Wonder if you could advise me on what I should be able to claim under warranty from BMW?

I am off to the States in July for 2 weeks so want to book my Z4 in and get the following sorted out whilst I am away:

Passenger side headlight needs adjusting
Some judder from the clutch when cold
Handbrake only engaging one side of the car - suspect cable may have snapped
whirring noise from power hood motor - may be getting knackered?
rattling from centre section of exhaust - baffle may have worked loose

What do you reckon? Or are all the above wear and tear issues?

Also would I be entitled to a courtesy car whilst the above is being carried out?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated so I have some ammo on my side for the inevtiable arguing with the dealer.

Essentially it's down to the age and mileage of the vehicle. Warranty covers things "not working correctly", but not consumables that have just lasted their service life and worn out. That said, consumables that wear out a lot earlier than expected should really be covered as defective items.

The clutch and exhaust issues may just be due to wear, in which case they wouldn't be covered.

The head lamp and handbrake I'd expect them to cover, because they aren't consumable service item. You'd expect to need a lamp bulb replacing after a while, but not for the mounting to go out of adjustment. Likewise the handbrake is self-adjusting for slack, so you'd expect it to be a long-term fixture. Same goes for the hood motor, but it's probably just bedding in, all hood motors make a coarse noise of some sort.

As for the courtesy car, you generally have to book them in advance and aren't "entitled" to one by virtue of having your car in for warranty work. They are mostly the company cars of the dealership staff, so they don't like giving them out for more than a day, so you can forget getting one for two weeks! They might hire you one, but I seriously doubt that you'll get one gratis.

Cheers Andrew.

Just a bit more info, the car is just over 18 months old, and I bought it from the main dealers 4 months ago.

My Z4 is coming up to three years old and is going in for a load of warranty work - electrical (seat belt warning light false alarm, low tyre pressure false alarm), SMG problems, corroded alloys etc. Dealer is lending me a courtesy car, gratis, for the duration, no need to arrange insurance.
Will let you know how I get on (appointment is mid June), but on the 'phone they were bending over backwards to help. You should find a list of what is and isn't covered in the books that come with the car; you may be pleasantly surprised - if you are reasonable with your dealer.

Have just come back from France, and Euro assistance was fair - included a tow in, and a taxi 50 miles to the nearest dealer. "Equivalent" courtesy car was a Passat TDi (new style) with a whopping 105bhp...
