5 series 1999 after approx 20 miles ABS light is on along with the ASC light
when this happends the speedo stops working and the fast wiper speed stays at normal
speed. Any thoughts on these problems would be a great help. Thanks

Sounds like a lame speed sensor then as that plays a part in all the faults that you list.

What is the model ? Manual or auto ?

Is there a sensor going into the rear of the diff housing, should be able to see it by just looking under the rear of the car.

Exactly the same thing happened to me - Yr 2000 523. It was one of the rear ABS sensors (I think near side) that drives all of the bits you mention. They screw into the wheel hub. You can do them yourself, but they are tricky to get to. Mine snapped off, leaving part in the hole it slots into. Got a specialist to take it out and refit a new one - apparently this happens loads so they are used to getting them out. Part is £55 ish - about 30 mins labour to fit.

On changing it, all problems you mentioned went away. Hope this helps,
