Z4M: it has a better engine (than all but the last run of Z3Ms), looks better and it won't try as hard to kill you.

Thanks for that.

Assuming that I find one of the S54 engined Z3M; and they seem to be going for less than 20K; Is the Z4 M actually worth the extra 20 odd K?

[Have been reading a review where they compare the Z4M with the Boxster S and it seems that while the Z4M is the faster car the Boxster S the "better" car. Might have to rethink the Z4M option.]

Yes, Munich Legends had one ... But on paper it seems to be slower than the M Roadsters. They had already sold it so I could not try it out.

I did take out Vines's Z4M Roadster today. Its not a bad car but the wife was not too keen on it.

It's a bit of an arkward comparison, because the Z4M is more capable in pretty much every area, but then it's twice the price so I'd hope so!

There's a London main stealer that seems to specialise in Z3M's, last time I looked they had a classic Roadster in; late model with the S54 engine in Phoenix Yellow with Kiwi leather (a-la E46 M3)! Looks unbelievable.

Can you tell me who the dealer is?

They're called Hexagon of Highgate. Just had a look at their stock on the BMW site, the funky roadster has gone but they've got a Coupe in the same spec! Unfortunately it's only done 3k miles so they want £29k for it! So much for cost savings versus a Z4M!

They have got three Z3M Roadsters at realistic money though.

I have owned 2 M Roadtsers.

The first an S50 which I bought 1 week after it was launched in Germany - bought it brand new in 1997 (LHD) saved about £10k on the UK price + igot it in 2 days instead of 2 years!!! It was the first MZ3 in the country - got looks everywhere I went - a Z3 on Steroids!!!!

Did 105,000 MILES in it in just over 4 years - loved every minute in it - had only two odd moments in it - one coming out of the chicane @ Donnington onto the home straight in second - back end went out - all ok when I lifted off though.

The second was terminal - coming home one night quite fast on a concrete road over some standing water - that was the end of my M Roadster unfortunately rolled it twice and it landed on its side - I walked away without a scratch - the car was buggered!!!!

My second M Roadster was a 2001 S54 in Phoenix Yellow - what a tool - I had a front strut brace on the first one - and this one I also fitted the front + rear struts and a body brace - better than my old Elise.

Anyway I did 50,000 in one year in this one then lost the car in my divorce!!

Overall I have to say that both my M Roadsters were the BEST cars I have ever had the privilage to won - both begged to be thrashed - amazing noise and feelings when driving them - if I could find another with LOW mileage I would sell my 911 in a heartbeat to get one again.

A car for me has to be fun - that means - fast, great handling (after the body mods I did) the noise - the looks - its simply awesome.

I have overtaken motorbikes on twisty roads, had the car off the clock (on a track), bent one, killed loads of tyres (first set in 3,000 Km!!!) Nothing beats it for me.

S50 + raw - totally mental
S50 - brakes, servicing intervals, no DSC, a little unreliable

S54 + servicing, build quality, fast as you like
S54 - brakes

Michelin Pilot Sports (Asy's) are awesome in the dry and in the wet.

The only other issue is scuttle shake - I would recommend getting all three struts from www.strongstrut.com c£700 - but it totally transforms the car - I mean TOTALLY - its the best mod you can do on the car!

FABULOUS!!!!

Wow ... you on commision or something?

You would trade in your 911 for a Z3M!? ... Is the Z3M really better than a 911? ... Which 911?

Sorry, not starting an agrument or anything, given that I have never driven either! Its just that people keep going on and on about the fact that the 911 is the best car in the world and ya-da-ya-da-ya.

As such I woulod be interested to know why the Z3M is better than a 911.

Regards

If the right M Roadster came up yes - I would swap - no question!

I am passionate about driving - cars and bikes - anytime/anywhere - I hate polishing/cleaning.

Sure the 911 is a truly magnificent car - I have only had it for 6 months (I have done 18,000 miles so far) the build quality is superb - but I have, in the back of my mind, a little respect for the "engine is hanging out the back" syndrome!!!

So I dont push it like I used to push the M - and I did push it - that S54 and I were best buddies - especially with the body/strut braces - I knew the limits - it just had so much character.

The 911 deserves a bit more respect + the fact that everything costs so much more on a 911 - he he he!!!

The M just begged to be thrashed everytime I got in it - the 911 begs respect IMHO.

Everyone is different - I personally just love the Z3M - simple.

Does it have to be a convertible? Ok so the Z3 MCoupe's looks aren't to everyone's tastes but personally I've always adored it - Munich Legends list a black S54 example on their stocklist (although that's usually horribly out-of-date). And the new Z4 MCoupe looks fantastic. Heaps better than the roadster.

The Z3M is a fab car - especially in the later models with the S54 engine and all the other enhancements

If you are interested in one ... then ... www.z3roadster.net/advert.htm

well I've done it!!!

Had my 911 for 8 months now - done 22,000 miles and I have to say its a great car - however it just misses something for me - fizzzz (as my wife explains it)!!!

I tried an Z4 M Roadster last week on the basis that an Z4 M Coupe might be the kiddy - but the Z4 M Roaster didnt really do it for me - sure its a tool - very little scuttle shake and lots of toys - but again it just lacked a little sparkle for me.

After 10 mins back in a Z3 M Roadster - I realised what I was missing.

So the 911 is going next week and in its place a . . . . .

2002, S54 M Roadster - I cant wait to get back to some FIZZZ!

Khushy

The mods on my list . . .

3 x StrongStrut front/rear/body braces (had those on my last one - what a difference!)
Parrot Bluetooth Phone/Head Unit in one
Some TLC body repairs - some stone chips and a tiny dent need doing

For what its worth:
My 98 993S has gone and been replaced with an S54 ZMC. Oh what fun. MC quicker and def has the fun factor that the 993 didn't give me. Peculiar thing, difficult to put my finger on why; might have been my paranoid respect for the 993 that took pleasure away, not saying I don't respect the MC, but thrashing it seems more acceptable somehow and oh the engine note. DSC; what DSC, turn it off ?
