buying AN E39 M5
Discussion
HI ALL
PROBABLY A BIT LATE IN THE DAY BUT I AM LOOKING AT BUYING AN M5 TOMORROW AFTER LOOKING AT IT YESTERDAY AND I HAVE A QUESTION OR TWO.
THE CURRENT OWNER SAIS IT USED ABOUT A LITRE OF OIL PER 800 MILES - IS THIS RIGHT?
ALSO WHEN STANDING AT THE BACK OF THE CAR IT SMELT EXTREEMLY RICH AND THE EXHAUSTS WERE VERY BLACK - COULD THIS BE INDICATING SOMETHING?
THE VANOS HAS ONLY JUST BEEN DONE AND IT SEEMS PRETTY GOOD APART FOR MTHE QUESTIONS ABOVE.
PLEASE HELP ME SLEEP TONIGHT!

The early ones are supposed to be heavy on oil, but a switch to a good synthetic might curb it a little. Also the MAF's are prone to failing so this might be the cause of running rich. Not cheap to replace either.
If it were me I'd hold out for something better, there are penty around.

I have read on another site you can get the MAFS for $200 imported therefore if this is correct i would not be too worried althought if it has been running rich for a while could it knacker the cats.
Also the car is a good price at 14750 @ 87K with full BMW service history but no warrenty. (is it a good price in your opinion?)

Zod - oil depends on model year. Pre 2001 cars must use TWS as you say, 2001 must NOT use 10-60 - it is too thick. The approved oil for the later cars is longlife SW 0-30.
Re oil usage - mine used to vary, but 1 litre in 400 miles was not unheard of when I was driving it very hard at high rpms. On commuting runs consumption could fall to 1 litre every 5,000 miles. But it is fairly typical for high oil consumption and not in itself an issue.
Kind regards
Steve

Most of them look dark on the exhausts lots of soot etc.
800 is quite normal but a little on the heavy side.
At least you had an owner that was aware of this issue and checked regularly.
Better than an owner that keeps running them dry. When the onboard computer warns you its already to late in my book.
Sounds fine go and buy it
