Spent two days over the bank holiday weekend replacing the lower carrier ball joint on both sides of the M5.

Got snagged on an MOT, despite the fact that I could feel no change to the handling of the car there was about half an inch free motion when tipping the bottom of both rear wheels.

After the MOT, and while doing the job, also noticed they had missed a broken rear antiroll bar bracket.

Bracket was a fiver, ball joints about £20 each. Although this is 'said' to require a special tool I found this could be mimicked with a large box spanner set. A 50, and 46mm box spanner can be used opposed to each other with a large threaded bar between them. I used a spring compressor I had lying around.

The thing that struck me was that the whole of the underneath of the car was aluminium. The large lower carrier could be held up with one finger when it was removed. Although this car is never going to rust, doing any work on the car means that hammers are a complete .

Anyone had this done on an E39 at a dealer and what they charged for doing it?

My car got picked up on this on the last MOT. I got both sides changed (not just the broken one), total bill including MOT came in at £78. This was at an independent though.

Surely we must be talking of a different part. The two ball joints cost £50, that leave your garage with a fitting job for £28 quid that they couldn't do in under three hours even with the special tools required, and thats without redo-ing the tracking.

Anyone know what BMW charge for this?

Clearly different parts.
