Has anybody tried to use a BlackBerry through the cars bluetooth telephone system? I tried with a new Jaguar yesterday and it didn't work at all.

I'll try tomorrow as I have a Blackberry and pick up a Beemer with Bluetooth.

Good luck, I doubt it will work. There is a bluetooth phone compatability list on the BMW site.

Rumour has it that the latest feature pack from Microsoft was designed to work with the BMW Bluetooth system. So sounds like chuck the Blackberry in the bin and buy a Windows Mobile 5 PDA!

I went to the BMW dealership today. They reckon that more phones will work than those listed. Let us know how you get on Ken.

Will do. I collect it at 9 so need to spend a bit of time figuring out the i-drive. I looked at the BMW site for compatibility and, while I could be wrong, thought that the list wos for models of phones that BMW can supply a bespoke cradle to fit in the armrest. The list of compatible phones was very restricted indeed. I'm no techo wizz but I would have thought that any two bluetooth compatible pieces of equipment can talk to each other so long as you set them up properly to "see" each other.

Time will tell.

I can confirm that my BlackBerry will work over the Bluetooth connection in my BMW 6 series. If you still have problems setting it up please let me know and I'll see if I can help. You might want to consider taking your car to a BMW dealer for a software upgrade if it does not work for you.

Thanks Ken. I am running a Jag at the moment but considering a new 535i. I have a test drive next week and will take the BlackBerry to test. I already tried it in the new Jag which has bluetooth but did not detect the BlackBerry at all.

The only thing is to try. You might find that you can pair it, but not access the phonebook - or that you can't make outbound calls, or answer inbound calls. Or more than one of those

I can certainly make outbound calls. Yet to try to receive them. I think you are correct regarding the automated phone book as the cradle is required for this function. I asssume it will build up its own phone book each time you use it.

Ken - I would be really grateful if you could keep me posted on this. If the BlackBerry will not work properly I will have to either have separate numbers for car & mobile or go back to simple mobile. Neither option is particularly appealing.

FWIW, you don't need to put the phone in the cradle for the phonebook to transfer. Depending on the phone, the phonebook will transfer across to the car via bluetooth too. Not all phones support this though.

Yes, the cradle is only there to charge the phone or connect up an aerial.

Yes the cradle solution is a classic piece of limited design thinking - it's very elegant if you happen to have one of the phones for which a cradle is provided but bloody useless otherwise. My Imate K-JAM works fine in my 535d, all the bluetooth capability is enabled (including the phone book) but it is irritating not to be able to connect to the external aerial since no cradle is available to fit it.

At the very least BMW should come up with a plug which could be applied to the cradle socket and from which owners could rig up separate aerial and power leads if they wanted to.

Are these cradles interchangeable? The life of the car is likely to be much longer than the phone and it ideally I would want to be able to change to a new cradle when I change the phone.

Yes, you can change cradles, but the selection is very limited and always lags behind the introduction of new phones.

I can receive phone calls as well.

Dialed and received numbers are stored in lists. There are 5 lists:

A-Z. This appears to relate to the phonebook only.
Top 8. The most frequently dialled numbers from phonebook.
Last number redial. The last 8 numbers dialled in order of frequency.
Calls not accepted. The last 8 unanswered calls.
Calls Accepted. The last 8 received calls.

I can't find a function on the BlackBerry that will enable the transfer of the phone book by Bluetooth. I will investigate this further and report back.

If you can find a "Send All Contacts Via Bluetooth" option, it's worth a try. If you can't get it to work, try re-pairing the phone, then do the send all thing immediately after pairing (before turning off the ignition) It worked for the Ericsson T68. Only downside is that the phonebook won't be updated automatically.

OK, I now have all my contact on my car's address book. It wasn't easy and took a bit of thinking but it worked. You may not have access to the same equipment to copy this but with some modifications it should be OK.

My work PC synchronises the address book with both my BlackBerry and a Compaq Ipaq. I transferred by infra red the address book from the Ipaq to an old mobile phone with Bluetooth (couldnt get it to transfer by Bluetooth for some reason!) I then set up the connectivity between the car and the old phone and sent the address book by Bluetooth.

Simple really!

So I can now confirm that it is possible to fully integrate a BlackBerry with a BMW as I have incoming, outgoing and adress book capabilities.

That's a bit of a performance. Also if you change something in the BlackBerry address book it will not transfer to the car - or will it?
