Tappety Engine
Discussion
Hi All,
New to the forum and new to BMW!
I have just taken ownership of an E46 330i Sport Touring which in general I am very pleased with apart from one thing....
I think that the engine is slightly tappety (spelling?) on tickover. It sounds like a single tappet that seems to be doing it and I just wondered if it is was common?
If not, do you think having a tappet reset (or whatever) would come under the warranty?
P.S. it has done 39000 miles if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Keith

Keith,
the tappets are hydraulic, not mechanical, so cannot be adjusted. If you have a tappet fault, then the tappet would need to be replaced. Should theoretically be a warrantee replacement.
Are you sure that it's not fuel injector noise that you are hearing ? Can sound a lot like tappets.

I think Bor might be right in that there's a fuel by-pass valve that will be operating at tickover somewhere in the fuel rail. It might be this that you can hear.
It's quite a disconcerting noise at times on my M52 2.8, but was also there on my 214k mile 328 E36 when I sold it too!
It might be worth getting the car looked at if covered by warranty, or get a compression check, just to be sure.

the first thing to do is use some Forte engine Flush then an oil change, then some Forte top end treatment. run it for about 500 miles if it still rattles then change the tappets
Sorry, but I disagree - Dont start sticking aditives in the engine. Get it down to a dealer for an opinion in the first instance.
