Bmw 525 tds stalling problem

I have a 525 tds (93) and its developed a strange problem, when you put it in first or reverse it will cut out, also when you put on the fan to the highest setting the car will not idle properly, I have been told it might be the fuel pump. I am not convinced of this so any ideas would be useful.
