E39 Diagnostics software...

...my father drives an E39 530i touring, and he has posed me with the question as to whether there is an affordable definative Diagnostics package available for the E39.

He's seen me 'plug-in' both my Cerbera and 300zx and diagnose various problems and feels that the ability to check on his cars health would be adventageous.

I have seen various software/hardware packages on eBay but I don't know enough about them to say if they're worth the money.

Any suggestions/advice guys?
