Mine's packed up

Does anyone know if I can fix it myself and If I go to a dealer how much it will cost?
Has anyone else come across this?

Not sure about that model of 5 series but the 3's used to have trouble with resistor packs dying.

It could also be the control panel.

To be honest I can't really remember. We had this trouble on an E36 328ci. The resistor pack was replaced which cured one problem but then the control panel had to be replaced for another. They were quite similar to the problem you mention so chances are it could be either (if the 5 you drive utilises resistor packs).

If there's a BMW specialist near you talk to them rather than main dealer. The resistor pack was cheaper than the control panel.

This happened to me a few weeks ago - No fan at all despite what setting the controls were on. Did some research on www.bmw5.co.uk and gathered the problem was the final stager resistor otherwise known as the hedghog resistor. Found this site www.540i6.com/finalstagereplacemen where a guy has posted specific instructions to change the resistor. I bought one - bout £58 quid and changed it myself. Bit awkward to get at, but easy to fit - just plug in and out. Fixed the problem.

I've had a couple go on 5s and 3s - it is the resistor pack and I've had all of mine done under warranty.
