Alarm malfunction

Hi guys, any sharp technicians amongst you?
I owe a 2001 520i, awsome machine, however I've been running into some problems lately. The alarm keeps going off after the doors have been locked. Sometimes 10 minutes after it's been armed, sometimes as long as 3 days. It'll go off for about 30 seconds, pause for a few moments and then repeat the cycle. Double-clicking on the key to isolate the inside cabin has no effect.
In addition, the headlights flicker a little (repetative change in brightness) while I'm driving.
Thus my question: are both things somehow linked to one another, ie. weak battery which might perhaps trigger the alarm and also interfere with the headlights?
