E39 540i "Trans Prog Failsafe"??

Hi all
Have a 540i E39 1998 which developed a problem the other day. when put into drive, it either starts to jerk mildly or there is no drive at all. When applying throttle, it revs freely.
The fault reading on the dash is trans prog failsafe which I assume is some sort of safety mode the car goes into.
Also the display on the dash telling you which gear the car is in
has frozen.
My regular garage cannot take it in till early next week to diagnose the problem but just wanted to see if anyone may have an idea what it may be. I hope to god the gearbox is not gone!
Car was being driven by the missus normally and not harshly at the time.
It has done this momenterly before on 2 ocassions but was fine after a few seconds. I understand this is diffucult to diagnose before it goes to the garage but would appriciate any help.
