Hi all

I am soon to a member of the BMW fold as I'm going to start looking for a used 535d this weekend. The question is, which are the options worth having on the new 5 and what are just gimicks? Sat nav is a must, but what others?

If its got a phone make sure its bluetooth'ed and it does look rather fetching with the MSport kit. But since I am looking at the moment, I have noticed that most are well spec'ed anyway. It looks like people have been rather smart when ordering and it is very much down to if you want satnav or not, or if you want the Msport or not.... which shows that people are being quite good.

Stating the obvious, leather and steptonic are basic must haves too, or are we accepting these are already in the base line?
Msport pack is worth having if you like to hussle it along A/B roads, if its to be a Mway cruiser then not so, although I think the ride is better overall on the Msport versions.

OK then, but I'd still add leather to the 'must have' list, unless that was standard too .

How about looking for one with folding rear seats ? (through load system ?)

And...logic 7 hi-fi ?

Personally rather have a good hi-fi (logic 7) than the sat-nav as TOMTOM does the job for £300.

Depends. Do you want the addons that add value when you try
to sell the car, or are you just asking what we find usefull ?

In which case, different people like different toys.

Me, I'd go six disc CD player, cloth seats, cruise control, park
distance control, child friendly lockable back doors and the
through loading system for the back seats.

Other folks might have different opinions.

The main one for me would be the active dampers - "Dynamic Drive" I think it's called. Active Steering is contentious, but I think I'd recommend it.

M Sport bodywork is also very nice to have.

Dynamic drive isn't an option on the M sport ones. Cruise control is standard on all. Active cruise control and heads up display seem very expensive options for quite pointless toys. But all the other options make sense . Mine arrives in a month!

Second that-as well as being safer than looking at the speedo.

Re the Bluetooth kit. Its a great idea but it didn't work well with the Nokia 6230i. It kept breaking connection with the phone. Also, it would cause the phone to go into 'data' mode so you have to switch the phone on and off.

After some time wasting with the dealer a tradtional car kit was fitted with cradle and mic. Better sound quality and no breakage in connection between car and phone. Not as tidy as the bluetooth set-up but more effective. Also, if you go bluetooth you need a car charger and a holder anyway...

That said, apparently this problem was only with the Nokia 6230 and not with other phones according to the dealer.

Yeah, seems to be a problem with the 2004 / 2005 models and I know a few people who have had to switch phones to the Nokia 6210i model. Works a treat (designed for oddly) for this model and one of the Sony Ericsson ones - and its perfect. Anything else and its a nightmare. I have no idea why as Bluetooth is pretty much standard.... but obviously not in the case of the BMW setup.

Ok, mines a damn site older than the E60, but full phone preparation etc. Ended up with a Nokia bluetooth kit and stripped out the phone prep as its crap. Not simple but works perfectly with all the Nokia's I have tried and also fine with a Motorola the wife has.... which is 10x better than the £600 option of the BMW bluetooth kit.... other than that, cracking car....

I need an E60 in my life....
