New X5

Hi Guys, can you tell me if the rumors ive heard about a new X5 being released end of this year/next year is true??

Ive been looking at buying one for a while now, but if a new one is coming out i will wait for it.

The new X5 will be released in the final quarter of 2006, so best to wait.

There are actually quite a few pictures and videos available of the new X5. It looks to be only 'slightly' longer than the current model and with a very similar profile and proportions. Chassis wise it looks to be even more agile with very little body roll. From what we've been able to garner thus far, if it does have a 7-seat capability then it will be similar to the Volvo XC90 in being a temporary facility with seats that fold into the boot floor.

Its about 5inches longer than the current car and the best way to describe it is an X3's bigger, harder better looking older brother that has taken horse steroids and gone to the gym for the past 3 years.

The extra seats in the back are an option over here but are very very usable for someone upto the age of about 14. And they fold absolutely flat into the floor as well. The dash has changed a lot with it being reminiscint of the 7 but newer and better. The signature sat nav hump in the middle and the big strip through the centre.

3.0 (yet to be confirmed which 3.0 - turbo or not) and 4.8 are here first can't vouch for the UK. There are rumours of an M version too as well as the V12 lump going in.

Longer by 5 inches will be a lot. I'd really rather it wasn't much longer, causes me enough problems if parking in French or Italian multi-story car parks. Sounds like a 4.8 in that Edmunds video, but after owning two 4.8is in the current model I'd be looking for an equivalent top model in the new X5.

There are going for premium and luxury this time, away from the rugged styling that it is now.

I'm not interested in more space and would really find additional size to be a handicap, so it looks like I will need to wait and see what the X6 offers. I only need 4 seats and around 450 litres of luggage so anything extra is just a waste. My concern with the X6 is that they make it too 'prissy'. I need a car that's as rugged as the current X5, can be used to do anything and go anwhere but also a performance car. Hopefully BMW recognise this virtue as they evolve the X5's bloodline.

Whats the X6? I know they are planning some sort of 4WD Coupe 6 series type hybrid thing but the only SUV's in the line up are the X3 and X5. That and the people carrier abomination...

Also the new M power cars over here will have a 4WD option too.. Eventually

BMW are planning for 2008 to produce a Coupe shell on the next generation X5's 4WD drivetrain. It will still ride 200mm off the ground and be versatile in terms of road surface. It will be 4.8m long, carry 4 people and around the same amount of luggage space as today's X5. BMW intend it to create a new niche, offering the virtues of todays X5 with less weight and more biais towards road performance. There's still some confusion over engines, the 5.0 V10 seems definite but some rumours of a twin-turbo V8 with 400+bhp and also an evolution of todays 535d engine and perhaps a lightweight 265bhp straight six 3 litre.

A press release came out last year 'describing' the design philosophy but so far nobody has seen any pictures. BMW have hinted that it will bear a resembalance to the E92 Coupe with a rear hatch similar to the forthcoming Z4 Coupe. How that will look is anybody's guess but there are some interesting renderings floating around that raise my hopes.

With the risk of appearing like a troll have people considered a Merc ML320CDi?

A far better car than the current X5 3.0 diesel, although granted I haven't driven the replacement/new version X5.

I really like the new ML, I sat in one before they were launched in the UK and found it identical in terms of size and functionality. I was interested in an ML63 and went in to two of my local MB dealers to discuss, but they were useless. Neither had heard of the ML63 yet both were quick to ask me for £1000 just in case MB ever decided to make it... doh!

Anyway I haven't driven the new ML, but I always hesistate when someone suggests a competitor as being 'much' better than the X5. The X5 was changed substantially in 2004. I've driven all the other competitors and where they better the X5 is always in areas such as more contemporary interiors, better ride quality, more space etc, but I've yet to drive a competitor that is as much fun to drive.
