I presently drive a T reg e36 323 which has provided me with 50K of relaxed cruising. Now its handling (compared to my wifes Sportka!!) is not biblical, but apperas more responsive compared to the 330/330d e46 saloons I have driven??

Is this likely??? or am I just deluded

I have both, and you are right, the e36 coupe feels wieldier. But, the steering on the e46 is sharper but slightly less communicative, the damping on the e46 is way better particularly at controlling sharp rebound (if you know what I mean). Also the e46 has a better anti-roll set up than the e36 meaning you can hang the arse out easier (sans slippy diff).

Heavier but improved is how I would put it.

I went from E36 323 coupe to E46 330 Touring.

My Touring has the sports suspension option which has the overall effect of making the car just as wieldy as the E36 coupe was.
