Please help people, at my wits end

I have a 99 5 Series Touring Esate. Love the car, however recently when the car has been stopped in traffic or working hard up hills etc it starts to smell.

The smell is like a meting pipe , over heating smell, but I cannot find the location of the smell. When I smell it I hope out of the car and have a proper sniff. Theres an aroma in the air, but no definite cause.

Water and Oil all are fine, nothing seems wrong there

Any suggestions or help is most appreciated

Thanks

Blocked pollen filter?

It's a service item but often doesn't get changed at prescribed intervals. When I changed the one on my sons e36 you could have grown potatoes in it. Also had a pretty strong and unpleasent smell which went after the new one was fitted.

I'm guessing here, maybe something (transmission fluid?) is leaking onto the exhaust system?

Transmission fluid, engine oil, and coolant each have their distinctive smell, which I am hard pressed to desctibe in words.

Probably if you get it up on a rack the problem can be found.

Good luck!
