It seems to be becoming the norm now for cars not to have spare tyres.

I've no experience of 'run-flat', but my M3 has the stupid sealant/pump system.

The one 'puncture' I've had was actually a full blow-out (split sidewall), so the sealant couldn't be used. By good fortune it happened close to the house of someone I know, even though I was 50 miles away from home, so I was able to wait in safety and comfort.

So, instead of being able to put on a spare, I had to wait two hours for BMW Emergency Service and then get home with the car on the back of the recovery vehicle. By then it was 1.00am. They wouldn't take a 'forward booking', so I had to get up at 6.00am and arrange for BMW Emengency Service to take the car to my local dealer. Massive inconvenience, but that's all.

But what if I'd had the blow-out driving through some really dodgy area in pouring rain late at night?

I've got a space saver (what's the point). It's the first car I've owned without a full size spare. The irony is they've left enough room in the boot well for a full size wheel. I just wish they'd have filled it with one.

At least a space saver can get me a few more miles down the road but you aren't supposed to drive on them for long and I think they're potentially very unsafe. A new a guy who had a 5.0 Chimaera and he drove around with a space saver on the rear for three weeks until I pointed out it wasn't a good idea.
