120d Auto Fuel Consumption

My car has done almost 5k miles so should be really nicely run in and in most respects it is. However the fuel consumption is seriously disappointing. On higher speed runs it's almost acceptable reaching about 44 mpg. However below 50 mph the car is less economical than at 70. Checking the instant economy on urban roads at a steady speed see the reading fluctuate between 25 and 40 mpg.

On a daily 12 mile commute that is more than half motorway it manages 35-38, this is restraining myself from enjoying the acceleration.

I suspect that there aren't many 120d autos out there, but I'm interested in how this compares to others.

I've had a 120d SE manual for a week now over 400miles - 26mpg (actual not OBC). I've been having fun.

If I had been enjoying the power all the time I'd understand why it's not achieving 40. However this week I've been trying to prove it's the car not me.
