Chaps, I want to sell my M5. Like anyone trying to get shot of a car, I want to do so quickly and easily. Normally I'd trade it against a new car, but in this instance I'm buying two cars to replace it (TVR Chimaera and Saab Estate), and am unlikely to find both at one trader - thus I want to sell privately. I've never done this before, I've always traded in or done sale-or-return at an independant, though both have resulted in prices I'm less than happy with...

Any suggestions, apart from poking it on Pistonheads? I have a wife and you daughter and don't really want all and sundry crawling round the house, so I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face by avoiding the likes of Autotrader - or is this sale-suicide?!

Edited to add - it's a 2001 fascelifted model with full comms pack, BMWFSH, and piles of over the top extras, so I'm hoping it's the right spec to sell. 87k on the clock. Does £18k sound about right?

Also, hope this isn't breaking forum rules by asking such questions! (Sorry Ted.... forgive me.... I'll buy another TVR soon, I promise!)

Stick an advert on PH as mentioned.

Also worth sticking an advert on m5board.com

Good luck with the sale.

Thanks Dazren, and thank you also for your help whilst I've owned the car, much appreciated as always!

Well the deed is done, hope the price is right, let's see what happens.

Sorry to see you go Red, but if my 850i BMW sale was anything to go by, PH generated a few test pilots in three weeks. When I finally got round to putting it in E&M I got 26 calls BEFORE the thursday it came out, and ended up beating them off with a stick. . Fair play to pistonheads as a great site but it has nothing like the readership of the E&M.

M5s always seem to advertised at prices higher than book. I had a look at a friends glass' guide the other day. A 2000 M5 with avg miles etc is worth less privately than your advertised price. But maybe they tend to go in pistonheads etc for higher than book?
Looks nice - I do think about replacing the cerb sometimes with one......

Book price is hilarious, especially when you compare it to what a dealer would sell it for....

autotrader seems to have quite a few at sub 20K. Even as low as 12.5K.

Book/Trade prices may seem hilarious but they are nearer the price level that private sellers can actually find buyers at.

M5s are difficult to price. When I bought my car (May 05), adjusted book price was £16.4k and forecourt price was about £19.5k, I agreed to pay £18k as I knew the owner/car and it had just had a full service plus an end of warranty checkover and works done. Similar cars were advertised on autotrader etc at £19.5 without the recent service etc.

Maybe worth checking out prices in "Top Marques", perhaps adjust your price if necessary, stick an advert in and invite near offers. I wouldn't take the prices asked on PH classifieds as a reasonable indication of what you can expect to achieve.

Fair points though Daz, well we'll have to see, I have deliberately priced it lower than other cars on both Autotrader and PH, hopefully there'll be a bite. Silly thing is I'm impatient as usual Shouldn't have started Saab and TVR shopping before I'd sold the M5, but hey, where's the fun in that?!

Is that current book value or the best trade bid you've received?

I sold an AMG for my brother two weeks ago and some of the trade bids were derisory. Lots of claims that cars aren't shifting so people arne't buying stuff in unless they can get it for a steal.

YHM BTW

I'm crap at negotiating and handling such things (except in business strangely!) so he beat a little out of me, but practically asking price. Very pleased that it's gone to an enthusiast too - he'd not heard of PH until last week, yes owns an Alpina B10, and now an M5 too! Coo!

Chimaera question as been scotched somewhat by getting distracted by my new medallion..... the golf clubs may go in the bin in lieu of a chest wig.....
