Hi,

My MD has just taken delivery of a new M5 after having a not so slow 535d sport for a while. He has had it up to 162mph despite the 155mph limiter.

He is interested in having it derestricted (for trips to Germany or Vmax days of course!)but the BMW saleman told him that the entire warranty will be void if he did....

Is that true? Anyone here ever done this?

Thanks.

Rob at DMS has already derestricted his M5 and a few PHers went out in it at the recent VMAX.

The warranty query is one that most owners must be asking themselves with all the media talk of the vehicle being a 205mph car. Why BMW don't allow it to be ordered from the factory with it taken off is beyond me.

My supplying BWM main dealer derestricted the E39 M5 I bought new and that did not invalidate the warranty.

162 speedo reading probably only equates to just over 155 real speed anyway. As Daz says, Rob at DMS is your man.

If you don't tell them I can't see how they will find out!

As has been said Rob has derestricted his but has had it re-mapped, result more response, torque, speed and a higher MPG too

Thanks for the help guys. I will contact Rob at DMS. My MD will love to hear that they can get better mpg out of it as it is averaging 13-15mpg at the moment-but hey, 10 cyliders need alot of fuel!

B19TOY-can you tell me who your supplying dealer was? I find it strange that one dealer will do it and another won't. Aren't they all supposed to fall under the same rules??

I've read that BMW will, in the future, be offering a derestrict option to those that have passed a BMW driver training course.

Not necessarily though... At Brunters, my M3's speedo was showing 161/162 when we were doing 161/162 through the speed trap (which I hope was accurate or GuyR may have a bone to pick with you ). I think BMW are just a little bit generous with the limiters.

I've frequently seen 170+ on the speedos of my two M3s and current CSL (in Germany). The Road Angel said that was in the low to mid 160s, so yes, they are a little loose with the limiter.

I think, on the other hand, that they may be exaggerating with the E46 330Ci in saying it has a limiter, because I never managed to get it to kick in. I did, however, run out of speed at a rather uncomfortable feeling 250km/h on the speedo.

Unfortunately, the BMW dealers can simply pop a computer into the car and it'll tell the technicians all the data they want, including what this topic is about.

With regards to it invalidating the warranty, its quite possible. Its just another excuse/reason for the manufacturer/importer not to pay out if something major goes wrong.

My speedo is a few mph out. reads 85 when the GPS says im doing 81-82. Curiously if you hold a constant speed (or just turn cruise on) and then reset the average speed counter it will also display the same speed as the GPS, whilst the speedo shows more.
Try it out when your'e next on a motorway!

The same happens if you set the speed warning. On my E39 740 it pings at the same speed as indicated by the Road Angel whereas the speedo is reading +6 to +8 kph.

Victoria BMW Harrogate. They thought a race licence was sufficient excuse.

Only if they are specifically looking for that data!

fail to see the point really. if you are of a mind to do 155mph what difference does an extra 50mph make?

why when a company like BMW spend literally millions developing a car can some backstreet garage come up with a plug in that does this?

Which they obviously would if there was a warranty claim going in for a new engine.

It's been said before that if you hold a racing license, and are buying a new BMW that you can have them to de-restrict it from the factory. Was mentioned on top gear too, when they had the M3 CSL in the isle of man.

Yes. BMW make a car to work in all sorts of places.

From -40C in a Scandinavian winter to +45C in Saudi Arabia
summer.

From stop start traffic in Mexico on 91 Octane petrol
to cruising all day at 150 mph on the autobahn
with 100 octane petrol.

One car that can do all that and more has plenty of
spare capacity built into the computer programs
that run it.

The back street companies take out some of the spare
so that your car is no longer so resilient as
it was.

This might matter to you, for most customers it
doesn't.
