No comments yet? Our E46 330d does 40mpg on a fast extra urban, 30 in general driving and doing 200 miles at 65 mph on the space saver over 55! Manual.

Haven't got one, but I have got the petrol brother.

BMW reckons I should get 30 mpg, and I get 27 mpg in practice.

BMW for your 530D reckons on 40 mpg, so take 10 % off that to get
an estimate of 36 mpg.

Depends on how much motorway versus how much in town stuff.

Your mileage may vary, you don't drive like I drive etc etc

Also haven't got one but my auto E320 CDI gets;

20-25 around town
40-45 on a motorway
36 average over 45,000 miles

had a 530d touring auto, and it is VERY hilly round here:

day to, local, about 25-28mpg

motorway run, mid 30's

Never got better than about 37mpg

For a 530D auto expect to average around 32-34 mpg max, for a manual you "should" get up to about 40. This will of course depend on the town/motorway split.

Yep, 30 - 32 in cold weather (don't know why), 34-36 in normal conditions. Never seen below 29, & that was driving very hard. Manual will be even better unless you drive it like a tool.

Cheers,

Gwaredd.

had mine down to low 20's, and it really wasn't that difficult! LOL Not a particularly economical car IMO

I remember lots of people complaining about poor fuel consumption with the automatics vs. the manual.

I like(d) the idea of one but couple that with the bills you see if (dare I suggest, when) the turbo fails and suddenly diesel doesn't seem very economical and 530i's are looking tasty. What sort of mpg do they get?

I agree, my 528i manual averages 32 on mixed use and on a recent run to Germany averaged 37 cruising at 85 ish - why get a diesel - much less to go wrong on a petrol IMHO.

Yeah a colleague has one and gets a stead 32-35 from it. Majority of the driving is on the motorway network at a steady 65-80. So pretty much what you would expect. That average is across the tank rather than at a steady speed.... so it covers a bit of town driving too, so actually pretty good. BMW diesels arent the most economical in the world, but they are some of the most powerful so you pays your price...

Just to throw a spanner in the works though - mine gets a steady 29...

diesel autos are pants cos the torque converter only locks at about 1800 - 2000 rpm, whcih is half way through the rev range for a diseasel, so town driving really kills it, even "slow driving on major roads won't get the best from it - you need to rag it ti get the best mileage - strange but true!

I always got over 42 mpg average in a 330d, so as an engine it is economical, it just needs to be matched to a manual to get the best from it. New turbo is about £750 iirc, plus fitting.
