To cut a long story short at 35k miles I had a main bearing failiure, the shell was replaced by an independent
BMW mechanic - the problem has happened again approx 18 months later.. I only do about 6k miles a year and dont drive hard...

On speaking to people locally and even contacting a company near London who race M3's they have not heard of this problem..
It is a lovely looking car and has currently only done 45K miles...!!

What do I do..!!!!!!!!????????

(E36 Model by the way)

Get your cash out, this looks like a good unit, usually you'll end up paying £2k for an Evo engine.

Well, kicking the main bearing, the crank one i guess here.
I think you may have a bad casting in the block...
That is the oilsupplyhole isnt smooth and maybe the flow is restricted.

You should have all the blocks oilholes deburred and made smooth.
Are you still running the same oilpump? try getting a better one, or replace it.

Somewhere in that oilsystem of yours is a restriction. Locate it!
Use better oil! Royal Purple is good ,'cause of immence filmstrenght!

Anyway. If you go long periodes without starting the engine, that aint good for
a highperformance engine!

The oil is maybe a thinner type and when you then start it... it can grind some metal!
Now going thinner to flow better isn a good idea when you only drive rarely.
going thicker could restrickt flow. so what to do?

Here's an idea... Contact Arrows. www.arrowprecision.co.uk/
They can get you some really tough coatings on your bearings, to make them last.
Other companys also make coated bearings.

Even if you dont drive your car often, you should start it from time to time, to let it
soak a little. say 20min once a week.

Well, Just som ideas here, things to think about.
