After 100k miles, 30 days outside the warranty (I know), and just as we're thinking of a replacement our '02 320d snacks on it's own turbo. I noticed the smoke cloud on the way home on Friday and had it recovered to the dealer straight away. But today we got a £2.5k quote to replace everything that got ruined. Searching around seems to bring a number of similar incidents. The dealer are going to ask BMW to pick up the bill so I will post back and let you know what they say. I hope it's the right answer, we were planning on getting a new 5 and a 3...

You have my sympathy - did you get a warning this might happen? Reason for the question is my '02 320d has done 92k and I'm sure the turbo has more whine than it used to..... though it could just be my paranoia.

No warning at all. The car was as strong as ever, but it had always been noisy so I may have missed a subtle change in note. All I saw was the cloud of smoke as it chewed oil through the system. The extended warranty looks good value at £720 now.

From what I understand there was a problem with some 2.0d and 3.0d engines and the turbo's blowing. I little more than that, but as ever BMW has done a good job of keeping it covered up so to say. A quick search of internet forums (or is that fora) reveal that there are plenty of failures, but only from the older 2000-2002 models and nothing newer so far....

But it happens - could happen to anything, luck of the draw sometimes though.

They've given us a token 20% discount on the parts. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick but only just. I'm gonna keep on at BMW and see if they can improve this. I still think it's poor that a major component fails so early in the car's life. Plus it takes so many other things with it and there's not a peep from the engine management system to warn.

Not sure if it will work, but push for 50% - this seems to be the mysterious level which BMW will go to on major issues and faults like this. Ok, so it might be 50% on parts only, but as you say, its better than a poke in the eye. Worth trying though - I think there is more to give.

As for failures - they can just go. Its a fundamental issue with turbocharged engines. Modern engine management systems disguise issues so well that you wouldnt necessarily be aware that there was an issue to start with. Now everyone has high pressure turbos with variable vanes and common-rail injection systems - its all running at very fine tollerances. One small failure is quite a lot of cash.... Bring back the days of the carb-fed TD engines where you can replace a turbo yourself! Helped a friend do this on an old Pug 1.8 TD engine - simple a simple could be and the turbo was so un-sophisticated it beggared belief!
