Ok, so we all know that a chipped diesel will go a lot better than standard, but after that's been done, what's next?

After owning & tuning various petrols over the years, the usual things being bigger injectors, higher fuel pressure, exhausts & fancy air filters etc, what options are left for the ever growing diesel owners that want to go that little bit faster?

I'm guessing free'er flowing exhausts & filters are an option, as is a bigger turbo running even more boost, but are there company's out there that make this stuff yet?

I think the trouble with us diesel owners is that after a re-map, where you get excellent BHP per £ gains, everything else is going to be A) expensive, or B) a bit of a let down, i.e, I think it's faster after my new filter.

So, is that what we are left with, conventional tuning routes & if so, what are the gains, or is there another easy power option out there?

What do you guy's know or reckon?

Cheers,

Gwaredd.

My uncle has worked with performance turbo-diesel engines (truck racing and powerboats), and his biggest tip for freeing up more horses was to increase the cooling, so consider a larger inter-cooler, FMIC or a charge-cooler. Can be done with an accompanying upgrade of the turbo as well. Also consider a water-spray system for the inter-cooler if you're gonna be really pushing it on a track.

Apologies if this is ignorant and certianly not in the spirit of PH, but I really don't get this!

Surely you buy a diesel (as I did) for economy and cheaper running. I understand why you might do a remap (ie £500, good increase in power and no other detriment) but why go any further? It's just going to get expensive and ruin the economy and resale value. Should have bought a fast car instead?

It was just a wonder really, for the benefit of all diesel owners who are/were wondering what could be next.

As far as the re-map goes, yes it's quicker, but also better on fuel, so the thought behind it all was, if I free up the breathing with a exhaust, filter & flowed head, it should go a lot better & give even more MPG as it's running more efficiently. Add a bigger turbo to help with the shove & it's moves the same weight car with less effort.

It was the same story when I tuned my mini from 63bhp up to 90bhp. Not only did it go a lot better, it was miles better on fuel. It was quite simply down to the fact that the engine didn't have to work as hard & worked more efficiently, as before to get it going & keep it there.

As for buying a faster car? Well, show me a car that's as good as a 530d Sport, RWD, as fast (236bhp 503Nm's) & still returns 35mpg with an auto box all for around £11k second hand.

To answer my own question, apparently by clamping the pipe to the EGR valve off so that it doesn't open gives a bit more low end grunt as it's preventing the valve from dumping red hot exhaust gasses straight into the path of nice cool dense turbocharged air.

Not tried it myself yet tho. Maybe this weekend.

Cheers,

hmm, you see i really didn't get on with my 530d (touring)- it was ok in most respects but not amazingly fast and not very ecomonical.

I got aboyt 27mpg out of it day to day, which doesn't sound too bad until I tell you I got 23mpg out of our E36 M3 evo doing the same kind of stuff.

Now got a v70 D5 volvo which isn't a drivers car by any stretch, but is very comfortable, very big and does 40mpg!

Ah, y'see that's where you & I differ then, as I swapped my Volvo T5 for my 530d sport as the T5, although fast, was not a drivers car & became very dull to drive very quickly.

I had a choice of getting a D5 (tuned, as quick as 530d) but it's WWD & uninvolving.

Now the 530 has been re-mapped, it's quicker than the T5 & does 13mpg more. I value enjoying my car every time & get in it over & above fuel ecconomy (up to a point, else I'd have an M5!)
