On my E39 540I the light has started to stay permenantly on.

had it looked at by an independant specialist who after a diagnosis put it down to condensation in the electrics in the bootside wells where the control units are? and also in the centre consol and footwells.

They tryed to dry it out but the light still stays on and they said it might go out in a while.

I find this strange??

Don't feel good about driving it with the ASC not functioning as the weathers getting colder and the misuss uses it more with the kids.

anyone had any experience of this or know what the problem could be??

don't want to take it to a franchise dealer and pay extortionate amout for a diagnosis if it can be helped.

thanks all.

Had this on E39 528i a couple of years ago - turned out to be a faulty wheel speed sensor. Meant that ABS and cruise didn't work either.

Any independant with the correct diagnostic equipment will be able to track it down.

From memory it wasn't that expensive either.

I also had similar problem - shut down ABS and DSC, intermittently put auto box into safe mode too. Dealer changed ABS sensors and computer, but eventually fault traced to intermittent bad wiring connection at back of fuse box. This made it very difficult to track down even with the diagnostic equipment.
