I owned a steptronic, and 'numbnuts' who is a mate has a manual. I remember the steptronic pretty thirsty.

I can't for the life of me remember how it faired in the MPG stakes for real world driving. I know numbnuts finds it a bit expensive for school runs etc, but I fancy doing some maths and working out some comparisons with my current car for extra cost for running one over a year or so.

16mpg springs to mind, any 540 owners with a 4.4 care to enlighten me. :D

Go on go on, tell me 25mpg :shout:Honest dear, they ARE economical. :D

Hi there - just bought a 535i myself and was worried about fuel consumption. But brother in law also has one and he is getting 30+ MPG, but then again he drives like an old man!!!

But here you go:

16.0 31.7 23.3 BMW, 5 Series E39, 540i Saloon

not quite the same but I'm getting an average of about 21 mpg in an M5, 2500 miles a month, varied routes (probably 60% M'way / dual c'way)
