BMW which service?

I have a set of warning messages in the iDrive that I need to service, but they dont match the email I got from the dealer.

Car says
Engine oil
Brake fluid
Vehicle check


Email says
Engine oil
Air filter
Micro filter
Spark plugs
Brake fluid
Vehicle check

Car is 4 years old and 30k miles. Is the latter considered a Major Service? The dealer has a website and is allowing me to tick various options, I just don't want to click too many.
£549 if I tick the dealer options too. Is that expensive?

It could be the normal BMW dealer 'upsell', or it could be that they've read the car's requirements and seen that some of those items are coming up shortly as well and so are offering to do them at the same time to reduce number of visits.

I'd call them and ask if you can't see the schedule for those items on the iDrive (mine lets me see some future requirements months ahead, as well as those that are due imminently).

If you're tight on cash then take it to an independent and save about 50% of the labour portion of the servicing. They'll usually do as good a job, use the same genuine/OEM parts (make sure you check) and you won't be paying the franchise premium.

That sounds like the major oil service which the I drive wont differentiate- pop into a dealer and get the key read to be clear but agree re an Indy at that age unless car is under extended warranty.

My warranty has expired.
When I click the iDrive it tells me the last history and it's all from the main dealer. If I go to an independent who has the genuine parts and the BMW software and someone sees their name rather than the dealer, would it affect the resale value of the car?

Independent services recoded as dealer 0000 on idrive. Opinions will vary on importance of FBMWSH and might be a helpful factor on a private sale- it s a M135i so worth the extra dealer cost if you choose and you can enjoy the coffee! Try a few dealerships as there can be flex in costs.

It'll be the dealer scope that they've listed.

Spark plugs are from 30k miles on the M135i plus add to that the 4year period. Air filter is similar.

If you've done the tick list on the dealers website try multiple garages within travelling distance online. I've found they all price individually and can be 10-20% of a variance, even if part of the same group.

I've found a typical service on the M135i was around £400, £549 looks proportional for the extra time and material for the extra scope at a main dealer.

Depending on how much you value the car when selling depends on an indy or a Main dealer for the service, an indy service will always mark down the price of a car versus main dealer.

At 4 years old and 30k miles that sounds like a major service (a minor service would have been at 2 years).
If you are selling sometime soon, a dealer service would probably look better to a buyer.
Independents are not always a great deal cheaper.

Brake fluid used to be after 3 years then every 2 years
The rest seem about right as I think micro filter is every 2 years

Plenty independents can update the key/ service history at bmw etc and can beat main dealer prices by a fair bit.

Bmw - and anyone with access to online history car check using the chassis number exactly what’s due online, bmw dealers can also request remote key read.

It’s easier to do that than it is to update the history at the moment, bmw have gone from being very easy to update to being a pain in the bottom.

The online system will also show stored warnings, so if you try to start without keys or with a door open this can show online too.


Land Rover and Ford are the best for online updates.
