Hi,
I'm purchasing a new set of wheels and tyres ( and TPMS) for the car after a pothole cracked one of my current wheels.

Found wheels i want, and tyres i think should be good, all happy and about to proceed then i saw about staggered set up.

My M3 has this, and i understand it all, but I didn't think that was the case with the x-drive.

My question really is, can i just get 19 inch wheels and fit with 225/40/19 Y all round?

Thanks

I can't recall the precise sizes but our 2015 435d had wider wheels in the rear and that was xdrive too.

I thought the wider wheels on the rear were there to provide more stability particularly while cornering.

Some respondents will say you'll be fine to run uniform sizes, others will say you'll immediately fire into a ditch and your insurance will be invalidated.

You could have a look on bimmerpost to see if it's a common thing to do. If you do proceed you might want to check your insurance policy to see if it's a declarable modification.

I have 225/45/R18 winters on mine at the moment (Cross Climate 2’s).

Mark them when I swap them in spring so I can rotate them when they go back on in winter.

It's personal preference

For xDrive; same sized wheels and tyres all round can be easier; cheaper too with better options for tyres etc

Our F31 is RWD; but I run 18x8 397s for winters and 18x8 405Ms for summers - same offset all round; all tyres are 235/45/18s - summers and winters (well all seasons)

It's the same principle for 19s

The 18" 405Ms are the dedicated winter alloys for the F3X range; the 397s too IIRC

If you do go for 19s; what size are they (19x9, 19x8.5 etc)?

Thanks

It would be these..

https://www.wheelbasealloys.com/alloy-wheels/bbs/c...

or similar (making choice tonight/tomorrow)

Car has had 20" wheels on, with good bloody tyres, but getting these with some either bridgestone potenza's or Goodyears fitted.

The only issue i know have is that i didn't realise they may be staggered like the M3, and want to be sure.

One thing about those wheels, is they are stated as J rim profile, so they won’t take runflats.
JJ (double J) rims are needed for runflats, but crucially, they can also be used for non runflats. I would look for JJ rims.
Additionally,m with staggered wheels, the rears need only a small pressure adjustment between just the one person and a full five people and luggage being carried.

Worth getting a wheel alignment check too.

I speak from experience!

If you go with with those. Stick with OEM tyre sizes if you're sticking to a staggered set up (as long as the offsets are right) and go with non RFTs too

Goodyear Assym6 F1s
Continental Contact Sport 7s

They'd be my choice.

The Assym6s on our F31 are superb. As are the all seasons.

My summers (SportContact 5 SSR) are 225/40r19 front and 255/35r19 rear on both my current F31 320D, and on the F31 335D I'm hoping to pick up tomorrow.

My winters/all-seasons (AllSeasonContact) are 225/45r18 and 255/40r18.

But yes, you could run a square set (i.e. the same size all round), as some models come like that and some winter tyre sets have a square option.

I ran summer wheels on the 19" staggered setup, and the M405 18" non staggered (and non RFT) for winter, and actually preferred that as quite a lot better ride and less road noise.

So yes, perfectly possible. If you could find a set of M405 it is also one of the lightest and strongest wheels

^^^

This; I am biased biggrin

18x8 405Ms - offset 34, 235/45/18 Goodyear Assym6s all round - drives and handles superbly

I'm running the 18" M Double Spoke 405M wheels all round with Cross Climate 2's. I agree, it does ride well on them.

I'm really impressed with the CC2s on my 130i; they've been superb through the cold we've had here

The Goodyear Vector Gen3s on the F31 have been superb too and they'll get tested more in a few weeks when we head up to The Highlands

They're on satin black 397s as the winter wheels (18x8 again, 235/45/18 all round)

We've got Continental Contact Sport 7s on our 135i, seem a good all-rounder so far

They're what I'll be going for when I sort summer wheels for my 130i; they get superb reviews

I prefer same size all round as I can rotate fronts/rears to even up tyre wear.

Es and Fs just don't look right with a square setup, imo.

They look spot on; unless you're led on the floor behind them, you can't tell. More so when the wheels are more or less flush with the arches

Don't think I've ever had a BMW (from my first in about 1990) that has NOT had a staggered set-up.

E34 520i
E34 3.6 M5
E34 3.8 M5
E86 Z4MC
F31 320D
F31 335xD

Even the winter/all-season wheels & tyres sets have been staggered.

I have found it impossible to find rear tyres of a staggered set in runflats
