Hi
any advice from owners of both would be appreciated...

I want to change car, current 535d (F10) I bought second hand but is now 10yrs old and showing it.

I am torn between used M440i or 840i - 2-3 yr old models of each seem in same ball park now for cost. I test drove both and liked both. It confirmed what i expected from reading up, the 440i felt a bit more sporty and lively, it has a ~40hp more I think due to mild hybrid newer b58 and similar overall weight. X drive and being smaller meant it felt that bit more nimble.

The 840i was lovely, felt like a powerful luxurious sporty cruiser, but not as nimble and steering not as sharp. Nice driving position and interior!

I need some practicality (2 kids in back). I felt 840 slightly more roomy in the back for my head space and knee room and i'm 6ft, but we're talking millimetres difference vs. 440 and i'm not the one in the back anyway.

I have read people talk up the 840 interior a lot vs. 440, and can see that a bit (glass gear shift etc) but not seeing a huge difference.

If anyone has owned either or both appreciate input from a practical ownership perspective, servicing costs etc also worry me a bit on the 8.

Luke.

I had a 840 for a few days, very big car on country roads. Also for such a big car not much space - fine if just for two people though.

I am in a similar position to you as in I am looking at both the 440i and 840iGC and I can echo your comments re the driving experience. The thing that is putting me off an 8 series is the cost of extending the official warranty. Whereas the 440i is circa £600 the 840i is nearer £1800!
The other thing is my current car is a late 2018 640d GC with almost every option, owned for 4 years, has never put a foot wrong and I am struggling to find a reason the change other than for the sake of it..

No love for the 540i? Or the m550i?

I'm surprised you felt the rear space was similar between the two. I had an 840i and there was no leg room at all in the back when I was driving it (and I'm only 5'9"!), whereas a friend's M4 seemed to at least have somewhere to put your legs in the back. It was one of the reasons I decided to chop in the 840I - I occasionally needed to carry adults in the back and it just didn't work.

In nearly every other respect though, I loved it; great for the long boring motorway trips, but still a bit of fun on fast sweeping A-Roads. A bit big for small B-Road though and annoyingly big in your typical 1960's multi storey - to such a degree that I actively avoided them! Overall it is a great car, but as others have said, it's very small inside for such a big car outside (the boot is a good size though!)

I had an m440i as a loan car for a few weeks. Liked it so much I got a m340i. Great car.

Id imagine the choice of which you’d get would depend on whether you’d need to warranty outside the PCP (840i would be more), size (840i obvs bigger, that wouldn’t work for me), luxury (although the current 3/4 is very good), depreciation and deals to be done.

I've had a couple of 840d GC x-drives in the last few years and they were very good. They're a full sized 4 door coupe with plenty of room in the rear (poss a bit short on head room in the back if you're tall), all the tech you could want, have a great engine and easily do 45mpg. I thought they were great but......the ride can be a bit crashy for what should be a lux car, clearly not helped by run flats and usually large wheels.

Before buying the first one I did look closely at the 2 door 840i, the room in the rear was very limited and getting in / out was a right pain. Didn't even take it for a drive as it wasn't fit for purpose for me - they do look lovely though.

Not had an M440 but spent enough time in BMW showrooms to know, at least inside, they're not in the 840 GC league.

This is the last 840d GC I had...got rid 5-6 weeks ago. Absolutely nothing wrong with the car - just wanted a less crashy ride.

Thanks for replies... apologies but I missed a crucial piece out - I should have specified I am looking at GC on both (due to kids) rather than coupe. So I can understand some of the rear seat comments on 840i coupe! From what I've seen not much difference in the back between the 440i gc and 840i gc, certainly not in head room terms, maybe slightly more in knee room.

Love that 840i pic, it's a gorgeous car, if it was looks alone i'd go for the 8. But so far leaning towards the 440i on practicality, ongoing running and (crucially) that I preferred the sporty very responsive steering/driving feeling.

Before my 535d I had a 320d coupe and that's been my favourite car to date, the 535d has much more oomph but is a bit more of a bus, the 320d was amazing to drive.

That said there's still a little voice somewhere saying 'go for the 8' smile
