Been spending a while searching for a 640d with the right spec.

Up to now, disregarded the 4 series, partly because the 6 series is meant to be more of a comfortable ride, along with other differences such as higher quality/luxurious interior - more appropriate for my 10-15k miles a year of mostly motorway cruising.

Although if you look at the 640d examples online, the vast majority have 20 inch alloys, whereas the 435d might have 18 inch alloys.

So this made me think, if I get a 640d with 20 inch alloys and VDC/non runflats/comfort seats, would it in actual fact be less comfortable than a standard 435d with 18 inch alloys?

Anyone out there who has driven both? Or has tried 535d and 640d?

You do 200/250 miles a week, mostly on the motorway? I'd be looking at electric if comfort and luxury are the main requirements. Do you have access to charging at home or work? Leccy or diesel? Which one would be the most pleasant environment for 30-40 mins a day?

I had an older E60 535d on non runflats. My father currently has a 640d with run flats and 20inch alloys. The 640d has a harsh ride.

I think non runflats is a must.

In regard to the other poster, I wouldn't entertain a used electric car.

You don't have to entertain it, just drive it.

i have a 640d on 20 inch PS4S. the ride (for me) was fine for me.

I wasn't very fond of the ride in the F13 640d with the 20's on runflats, but then I'm not happy with the ride in the F82 M4 on 19's with normal tyres either. I'm just a fussy bugger I reckon.

The ride in the 640d did improve when I swapped to normal tyres though.

pretty sure that's not answering the question that was asked?

Have you seen the interior in a Tesla Model 3 for example? There isn't anything pleasant about that environment for me, and I reckon that sitting outside on the pavement would be a better environment in comparison. biggrin

Have you ever seen the interior on an ix3/i4 etc?

Exactly the same as any BMW.

Indeed. But it is posing another option that maybe the OP hadn't considered? Not having to deal with nasty black fuel pumps carries a lot of weight for me. In fact, not having to bother with fuel stations at all is surely a plus?

Ah, that's partly why I didn't specify Tesla. Mind you, I think I'd still rather have a Tesla than a diesel these days. Especially if I'm only doing 40 miles a day.

I swapped the 20s on my 640d for 19s, which noticeably improved the brutal ride (I kept the runflats), but in terms of actually being a comfortable place to spend time the 6 series is on another planet compared to the 4, so it depends what's important to you.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don’t want an electric car!

Plan was for a fast/high torque diesel.

Yes and plenty of folk do love Tesla's in fairness. I'd still personally take a 640d over one though, because I can't get past the way that they look both inside and outside. My ego wouldn't let me buy one for example.

I've done about 65k over the last 4 years in a 640d GC. 20" wheels and standard M Sport suspension. For motorway journeys it is superb. Very comfortable, quick and 45mpg. A car on smaller wheels may be less crashy in certain circumstances but overall as a motorway cruiser anyone who has travelled in the 6 has been very impressed.

In my opinion, the interior is a different league to a 4 series and much quieter which adds to the overall "comfort".

If comfort is your number 1 priority, you could go for a 730d for similar money which is next level.

This is reassuring!

Hmm it’s a mixture of comfort/luxury/enjoyable torque/fuel efficient and slight exclusivity.

That’s why I liked the 640d GC, a lot fewer on the road compared to the 4 series which has a more common look.

I was looking at the 730d, but felt it would be reducing on the sporty element of the drive - of course 640d is no sports car still!

It’s just annoying the pan roof doesn’t slide with the 640d but with 435d say it does

I'd test drive both OP and see what you think, there will be other factors such as suspension setup which will affect things.

FWIW, I just swapped out runflats on my old 635D and its made a nice difference to the ride quality.

Yep might do this. Although sometimes it can be hard to truly gauge the comfort of the ride during these short test drives!

So many people have said run flats vs non run flats make a world of a difference, so if I get a 640d would be non run flats, and there’s a few I have my eye on with VDC.

Of course, I could get a 20 inch alloy 640d and change to 19 inch but it’s an unnecessary hassle.

I wish there were more 19 inch alloy 640d m sport examples!

There’s a few SE examples with 19s but often lacking in spec

Why switch to 19s but still keep the run flats?!

Okay, I guess comfort is not entirely about feeling those bumps in the road but about the overall experience.

Have you driven both the 4 and 6 series at all?

So the consensus seems to be, overall comfort for a 640d with 20s non run flats > 435d with 18s

Yes, a 6 ticks the boxes you list. Subjective of course, but I think it is one of BMWs nicest designs.

Whilst it isn't a sports car, I do enjoy hustling it along when in the mood. It has a surprising turn of pace and the noise inside (which is piped in) is good. I wanted a pan roof then this car came up without one but was too good to pass. It's a 2017 so has the updated idrive, different wheels and sonic blue colour which is eye catching.
