Parking brake X1 F48 LCI

In Drive, sometimes the parking brake will set, others it won't.
Why?
71 plate X1 2.0i xDrive
Had a "Parking brake failure" message once, a month ago. Service at Sytner yesterday could find no fault other than the key record of the failure.
When it won't set, display message says to put it in park.
Why?
