M240i All- season tyres?

I've recently bought a 67 plate M240i. It has fitted, a new set of MPSS.

I understand they can be a bit scary for use on cold, damp roads when used on the M-lites. I live in the south west, so snow very rarely an issue ( and i wouldn't take the car out if there was, anyway) so Winters would be overkill really, especially as an All-season like the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 has such high regard.

What i am a bit confused about is that, i think if you have BMW supplied wheels and winter tyres, they supply a 17" smaller width square setup rather than the wider 18" on staggered sizes. I presume that's because you can have a higher profile tyre more suitable for snowy conditions?

Do you think it would be ok to just take the MPSS off and straight replace with the original tyre sizes but, with All-seasons? I am hoping this works ok for what i am trying to achieve, regarding driving conditions? Cheaper than buying another set of wheels, and so would just swap the tyres back again next spring.

It's the cold, damp roads i want the tyres to be good at, as i can well remember a few years back when i had a Z4C, that scared the life out of me one day in the winter, when i went to overtake on a DC , and the car lost traction and threw me sideways so quickly- that wasn't even on full throttle and a much less powerful car than the M240i..

Yes absolutely...

I'd also highly recommend the Goodyear Vector Gen3 all seasons; superb tyres and they're what we run on our F31 from now until Spring; did the same Oct 2024 to March this year and they coped with the cold and snowy conditions in the Highlands with zero issues

You can see the tread pattern in this picture; it's edge to edge and does a superb job



We run Goodyear Assym6s for summers and the all-seasons for winters...

I've not fitted them to my 130i as wanted to try the Michelin CrossClimate 2s and so far, very impressed. £60 cash back on 4 Michelin tyres via Camskill also

Used wheels are cheap and plentiful for these. Re winter tyres/all seasons I’ve tried both. I found all out winters great in snow and ice. All seasons, Michelin Cross Climate. I found these awful. Worse in the cold and wet than decent summer tyres. Noisy too. I’ve not tried them in snow/ice.
I know this experience will probably be different to others. It is based on mostly rwd BMWs with one fwd car on full winters. Given your lack of snow Pilot Sport 4/5/s/etc would probably do the trick.

Any Fx wheels that clear your calipers. Dan will probably have a good idea given his F series experience.

Yes but I've 2 sets of alloys for the F31. The ones in the picture are the 'winters'...

For my 130i I've just fitted the Michelins to the existing wheels and sold the Michelin PS5s that were on there as tbh even only having the car 2 weeks, they're not as good as PS4s were. Harder, noisier and with a distinctive drone... They were 2023 tyres with 6mm tread left...

Whereas the CrossClimate 2s are smoother, quieter and with no drone at all and superb grip in the dry (I found that out by scrubbing them in on a few local country roads)... and fantastic in the wet as its lashed it down since Thursday here in Lancashire...!

I'd highly recommend both flavours if you can get them in the sizes you need and deffo check Camskill for prices and cashback offers

All 18" Fx alloys fit over the large Brembo 370/345mm brakes and calipers, as per my picture above

The satin black Style 397s in our F31 cost me £200 and £200 to refurb FYI

I think i will just look out for a cheap set of suitable alloys, and put the All-seasons straight onto them, keeping the original alloys and the MPSS tyres ready to put back on next spring.

You could fit 225/40/18 all-seasons to them with no issues

I use all season tyres (GY Vector gen3) over the winter months on my M135i, they are excellent on the cold/wet/muddy roads down here in rural Devon. Limited but good experience in snow and perfectly acceptable when the roads are a little warmer and dry.

I bought a set of 441m wheels from a 3 series for summer use (with PS4’s) and put the all seasons on the original wheels. There’s not a lot of choice in 245/35/18 for the rears so I ended up fitting 235/40/18 with no issue.

I’ve previously run full winters on this and other BMW’s (when living/travelling to/from Cumbria) but the all seasons are much better suited to life in the South.

If you can store the second set of wheels when not in use then this is 100% the way to go.

Hell fire that's some ownership and miles! Never managed more than just over 2 years with my cars; the Jap import E39 530i touring was 2 years & 5 months... The F31 will be 2 years in Jan 2025!

The E81s getting well used though; not fussed about putting miles on that as its at 143k now.... Just need get these bits done to it and it's future proofed for my ownership

Just replaced Cross Climate 2's with a set of the latest Pirellis based on the review linked below. The CC2's were good but it seems the world's moved on since they were introduced; due to higher wear the Pirelli didn't actually come out top in the Tyres Review test but that wasn't a high priority to me whereas an All Season that drove more like a summer tyre was. Early days but impressed with the Pirellis so far.

I used to have 2 sets of 208Ms shod with winters/summers but i got fed up with the faff…

i understand if you live right up north or something, but otherwise I’m inclined to just drive to conditions and let my foot manage the road surface.

That I get... More so for folk more Southern

For us even here in Lancashire the all.seasons to see the cars through till Spring makes a lot of sense

For the wife in the F31 now commuting more in her new job with the NHS. It'll see her through the torrid rain we get (just been having) but also if there's been a bump on the M65 (happens regularly) she can soon use the back roads and country lanes to circumnavigate, and those roads are rarely treated / looked after...

Plus we have our jaunts up to the Highlands to ky folks property...

Having all seasons on both cars allows peace of mind for us and we can use both without any issues...
