Contemplating getting either an X3 or X5 as my next caravan tow car in a couple of years, maybe a 2022 model or around that age.

Is there much difference in ownership and running costs between the two models? Other than size and engine choices are there any key differences to help choose between the two?

Can’t really help but I have a 2023 X5 40d from new.

I have had it 17 months and had to replace 1 tyre, it’s been faultless.

First service next week.

I guess you will be looking for diesel but I have a 45e X5 towing a twin axle caravan. Car is my company car as the BIK is fantastic. If it was my own car I would have an X5 40d.

It does approx. 250 - 320 miles when towing as opposed to 420 when not. Pulls very well.

Main disadvantage against a 30 or 40d is the range. My Dads 40d had an 800 mile range when full.

Not had any issues with the car in 30k miles, 4 new tyres at 28k, £1,650.

Big plus in my view for the X5 is the air suspension. Lovely ride and keeps everything level.

It’s a great car. Mild hybrid. Quick, luxurious and on a long run from Bournemouth - Manchester which I do regularly it does 44 mpg.

I love my 21 plate 2.0d mild hybrid X3 got a fair few toys HUD Adaptive Dampers HK etc its great mile muncher returning 59 MPG at a steady 70 mph. Off down to Murcia in Spain in a couple of weeks. Only had a sensor go on the exhaust that’s about it in three years.

Our X5 has been faultless, 26 months/19k miles old now and hasn't put a foot wrong - low spec vs some but has all that we need.

I would comment on MPG but I can't, I think we've only filled the petrol tank 5 or so times. With a 17 month old baby it's been perfect.

We have thr 30d mild hybrid, and I have to agree it just chews the miles

Did 270 miles to Looe from Derbyshire and it felt like I'd popped to the shops.

Sure it's about 50ish mpg.

Fifty mpg is easily achievable. On a recent trip back from Heathrow it was 59mpg 18 of those miles the car coasted on declines, according to the App on my monthly review.

I’ve had a 30d X3 now have a 40d X5

X3 averaged 36mpg over 40,000 miles mixed driving. The X5 is averaging 32

Tyres on the X5 are ~£250 / corner or £1,000 per set

Routine services are around £400 on both at a good Indy

The increased size and weight of the X5 is noticeable. Recommend the 40d engine

Thanks for the replies.

Size wise, is the X5 pretty much an enlarged X3 with more space inside for driver & passengers? Is the X3 spacious for the driver?

I'm 6"2 and I've plenty of room and I have my seat nearly all the way back.

Love ours to be fair

The X5 boot is bigger too. Both spacious cars. Worth sitting in both to know what’s right for you

Who was that with??

We've placed the fronts a couple of months ago and they were just shy of £500 fitted and and tracked up.

This is an interesting thread as I am in the same position as the OP. What I find odd is that the 2022 X5 30d with mild hybrid is often cheaper than the 2020 X5 30d. Is there a reason for this?

No reason at all. Poor spec?
