had pads changed all round on my f30 3 series.

really good indy did the job, about 4 weeks later clunking started when applying brakes after a change of direction, eg reverse onto drive after driving forwards into the street.

been back to indy today, normal apparently with m sport brakes pads. did not notice this before .

any ideas how to eliminate as is starting to get annoying.

OEM BMW pads or aftermarket ones?

Some aftermarket pads don't sit correctly, hence the clunking... OEM are made by Jurid FYI

I have m sport brakes on my F30. When worn, they were changed by main dealer. No issues whatsoever.

OEM BMW pads or aftermarket ones?

Some aftermarket pads don't sit correctly, hence the clunking... OEM are made by Jurid FYI
just had rear pads done last week, genuine parts from bmw. they were textar. Must be in rotation.

Standard brakes or the Brembo calipers?

Textar, Jurid, ATE and TRW are the OEM makers, tends to the 1st 2 that make the brake pads however

thanks for the replies.

does not say on the invoice what manufacturer of the pads.

the indy are generally very good, i used them to takeover from bmw servicing due to geographical convenience, and the price was less than bow but not by much. i don't believe 'they all do that from the factory' as it is a loud clunk-i feel a trip to bmw coming on for their opinion .

shouldn't clunk. they do squeak.

clunking sounds like somethings loose or not sitting properly. likely the pads but also could be a loose spring/clip etc.

I’ve always had BMW dealers fit my brakes. Never had a squeal or clunk.

As already said; generally aftermarket pads don't fit as well, more so the cheaper ones. Even Brembo standard pads are crap!

ATE, Jurid, Textar & TRW are the OEM makers of pads - get pads from them and they should be fine. OEM BMW pads aren't that expensive

Still haven't answered if you've standard calipers or the Brembo calipers - that could do to be known

Genuine BMW pads do it in my E91.

Honestly I just live with it.

I had an F10 5 series that used to do it and now I’ve got a G30 5 series and that’s the same but also this one squeaks when reversing and braking too! Always done it and both of them had genuine bmw brakes before I bought it. I just live with it and reading bmw forums it’s fairly common.

If they didn’t replace the spring plate on the rear of the pads, this is a common symptom. The Jurid and Textar you get from suppliers various are not the same grade as oem. My F31 with oe pads Proper M Sport calipers) used to squeal like a stuck pig, Brembos with new spring plates cured them.

Guide pin is also recommended to be replaced, as well as the expansion spring.

Yup. If we are talking about the 370/340 brembo setup, then genuine discs and pads have served me well. No clunks, squeaks, or any noise what so ever.

ATE stuff from AutoDoc on the other hand, different story biglaugh

I changed out my front discs and pads a year ago and the genuine pads are Jurid, made in China. The discs are unbranded, so fook knows who makes those.

they are the m sport plus big brakes(blue callipers)

i will update when I have seen what bmw have to say about it.

was driving in a multi story car park last night and the clunk is really loud in there!

Deffo find out which brand pads they've used as well

The brakes on my F31 don't make any noises at all; however they're all OEM BMW with the grooved/slotted M Performance discs

My pal Chris's F31 320D had OEM standard brakes/calipers and he fitted Delphi pads and they were atrocious; fitted the blue Brembo brakes package and fitted Brembo pads and they clicked/rattled a lot. Fitted OEM pads and zero issues (that's with Brembo 2 piece discs front & rear)

Wondering if cheaper/aftermarket budget pads aren't quite the right fit of whether a parts been missed out when they've been fitted, as mentioned above?

Yes, mine are 370 front, I think the rears are 345 (according to OEM parts listing). I believe 340 is the standard (non m-sport) front dimension.

thanks for the replies above

latest update on this is I have been back to the specialist today and upshot of that is

-bmw have released a service bulletin saying that this clunk is normal

-they can replace the stainless steel 'pins' holding the pads as they may be worn contributing to the clunk but that's an extra 75 per corner(cost price from bmw)

-they can use a sort of double sided sellotape to glue the pistons to the pads to stop them moving

-they can replace the pads and put in a warranty claim if they are defective

alll the above will give no guarantee to stop the problem

I do not know what to do next, the performance of the brakes is fine its just the bloody clunk!

I've never had a brake noise like that. To put it politley I'd be asking to see a copy of the service bulletin.
