Hi all,

After some advice please; my 116i (has induction kit and exhaust mods) has recently lost turbo boost, the garage that has looked at it thinks I need to replace the turbo (as does another that I spoke to and explained the symptoms). My question is, has anyone put a Stage 1 or 2 hybrid turbo on this engine without any internal mods (ie rods etc)? Is it something worth doing, or am I better just replacing with a new stock turbo?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Just slap a new snail on it from the aftermarket. It will be exactly the same thing as OEM minus the BMW branding, but half the cost.

If you go hybrid, you are entering into a world of shonky remaps, and then you will need a bigger intercooler etc. Worse mpg in boost, more strain on the internals etc etc.

Not wanting to appear rude, but you'd better off selling it and getting a bigger engined BMW if you want more reliable power.

It might be worth checking the boost pipe O rings haven't shrunk and are bleeding boost pressure off before condemning the current blower. Look for oil patches on the boost pipes connections. A lot of garages are too quick to suggest a new turbo without doing proper diagnosis. If you have ISTA or Bimmerlink, you can monitor the requested vs actual boost pressure to get an idea of turbo health.
