Bought an 2014 X6 last year with good tread on all 4 tyres.
Just noticed the front nearside has worn badly on outside.I presume tracking.
One garage has told me I must keep with run flats and should probably change all 4 being an xdrive.
Another has said I might get away with just the front 2.
Do these cars need run flats?

If the difference is thread is 1-2 mm you can get away with only changing the front tyres, otherwise the transfercase would be in a bind. Stick to the same brand and model of tyres as on the back. Some will say you need "*" BMW approved tyres but the jury is out on that. Less critical if you have a non-staggered set-up.
As to non-run flat tyres: Yes, possible but only if you change all 4 tyres

Unless your tyres are worn less than 3mm from new then you'll probably end up needing all 4. I've found on a 2014 X3 that if there is more than 3mm between front and back then you get shunting at mild acceleration from standstill (and when flooring it from low speeds).Just noticed the front nearside has worn badly on outside.I presume tracking.

I’ve got a 2016 X5 40d M sport with staggered 20” wheels and have changed the tyres on the front and rear axles independently a few times with no issues
Mine suffers with uneven tyre wear on the inside edges of the tyres, even when corrected tracked and aligned
Mine is still on run flats but non run flats are ok and improve the ride (I switched my previous X3 to non run flats)

Mine is a 335d x-drive, staggered run-flats. I too have replaced a front and a rear tyre separately, no issues. Mine suffers with uneven tyre wear on the inside edges of the tyres, even when corrected tracked and aligned
